Looking to pickup a tiller at a local dealer.... I was looking it over and said , hey when did Subaru get into the small engine business? Was told that Subaru bought out the company so it carries there name... but its really a "Robin" made engine, they have been making commercial grade motors for decades....

I have never heard of "Robin" engines... are they any good? Or should a wait till next years model and get a Honda motor.:dunno:

Robin engines are part of FUJI Heavy industies that also make Subaru's and Wisconsin engines are the US distributor for ROBIN engines and generators etc. The company was called Wisconsin Telendyne Total Power Products when they started to import them.

They're some of the best small engines in the world; right up there with Honda and Mitsubishi.

The "real" story on Robin engines is this. When Bruce Wayne ditched his sidekick, he gave Robin some money to go into business. Robin, of course, had no real business skills so he moved from Gotham to Wisconsin and got involved with a small engine company. Alfred had kept in touch with Robin and suggested he investigate partnering with a retired Japanese crime fighter. One of the aging Godzilla fighters took pity on Robin and after a night of drinking too much sake at a karaoke bar on the outskirts of Osaka, he and Robin came up with the idea of getting Subaru to make "Robin" engines. Bruce Wayne had laid off part of his engineering staff and Robin decided to put them to work for him in his engine business. Therefore, the Robin engines have a Batmobile and Batbelt gadget pedigree. Good stuff since I don't think Batman's gear ever really let him down.

That's the true story of Robin engines.

The Robin engine has always been built by Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan. Generally a well regarded engine, but in the 1980's and 1990's Fuji was a little late adding innovations such as electronic ignition and overhead valves. Today, Robin is right behind the Honda GX OHV engine and considered superior to the Honda GC and Kawasaki motors.

Fuji originally partnered with Teledyne Wisconsin for distribution and parts support. Fuji felt they didn't have a meaningful footprint in the US and Wisconsin did not have competitive offerings below 10hp. In theory the partnership should have benefited both parties.

However, Wisconsin has foundered and Fuji was dissatisfied with their performance. Also, Fuji had been successful with the Subaru automotive line, increasing name recognition and quality perception. When renewal of the partnership approached, Fuji elected to take over distribution and support, and rebadged the product as Subaru-Robin. At the same time, Robin freshened the line by eliminating flat head engines to meet EPA emissions requirements and introduced several modern OHV and OHC models.

Fuji now markets their small engines worldwide under the Subaru umbrella and there is currently no ongoing relationship with either Teledyne or the newly constituted Wisconsin Engines.
