I have a tendency to overbuild as well.... However, I must bow down and pay homage to that work! If you or anyone you know can flex those stairs I would prefer to not meet up with y'all in a dark alley! Well played Mr. Roboto, well played! :)

 That's funny. The manufacturer of the composite decking actually specifies that you're required to go 8" on center on the stair stringers. I wish I had known that before I decided to make the stairs to the deck 6.5 feet wide, but oh well. 10 stringers later, and we're good to go  I don't suspect that there will be any play in them now.

I wonder if they forgot the "1" in 18 inches. 8" on center sounds crazy to me. Deck looks great, by the way.

Just read every post and page of this. Great build. I like your attention to detail. Although, I don't think we've seen a picture of the garage as a whole - just small pics of sections. :) I started reading yesterday at work and ended up staying almost an hour late because I got distracted haha

Holy stringers, Batman!

I've been reading along but just now had time to comment. The deck is looking great. Just in time for one of the best parts of living on the east coast... Fall BBQ season! (before the wind and cold sets in )

Keep up the great work.

Cheers,
Chris

Agreed....And if it's worth overdoing, it's worth re-doing....and again....and again....lol

It's a vicious cycle!

Thank you! And I hear ya, I questioned it myself. But, better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for taking the time to read through it all! Hopefully it was worth it to stay late  You're right, I don't think I've taken some good overview shots of everything in there. I'll need to do that, once I've wrapped up some projects and cleaned the place up a bit.

Thanks Chris! Yup, that very short and magical time of the year where we can watch football and grill simultaneously

Looks like I need to get these projects I have in limbo wrapped up, because I need to get started on a nursery! My wife and I are expecting our first child, due in March. It's going to be here before we know it, I'm sure.

Congrats! Prepare yourself for a level of crazy that you have never understood before. I thought before we had the twins that I understood crazy. I did not. It'll be fun ... but crazy.

Thanks man, we're excited, anxious and nervous all at once, which I'm sure is pretty normal. We had our first ultrasound, so at least I know there's only one in there

Hopefully yours is better than mine but I'll warn you about hormones. They make them crazy and they take years to go away. Plus they forget everything.....everything. We gave two kids, I want a 3rd but we would probably need a surrogate as the last pregnancy was almost too much to handle on the crazy scale. Don't let this scare you its still a blast and I'm pretty sure you aren't married to a redheaded Scorpio from NJ like me. Crazy is in her blood.

Haha I've been pretty lucky, it's smooth sailing so far. We'll see what the next 6 months bring!

Re: Mr. Roboto's Garage Makeover

Congrats on the addition Mr. Roboto!

I always tell my friends they are not missing a thing not having kids. Which is the truth because you can't miss something you don't know.

That said the birth of my daughter last year has been the most rewarding awesome experience of my life. Life is richer and better since!

And if you are real lucky (we were) the horror stories of sleepless nights won't happen for you. We can't count them on one hand.

You are in for a ride the best of your life!

I second this - even with twins we had them both sleeping 12 hours straight when they were about 2 months old. It's about routine and consistency (at least it was for us)

Thanks again guys. My wife sleeps like a log, and I'm the light sleeper. I have a feeling I'll be the one waking up a lot.

She wants to do one of those baby announcement photos. Being the awesome wife that she is, she's up for doing a garage related idea I came up with, so stay tuned!

Now you all get to see my ugly mug...Here's our pregnancy announcement. I'm surprised she went for it, but my wife loved the idea of the garage themed announcement.

Thanks again everyone! We find out the gender in about a month, which we're really looking forward to. Knock on wood, but my wife has been doing great so far, very little morning sickness to speak of.

Well, it's been a while since I shared an update on the deck. Quite some time ago, I placed the order for the rest of the decking to lay down on the stair treads, as well as the angled railing sections for the stairs. They're special order, so they told me a week to come in...no problem. Ended up taking 2.5 weeks. They called me and I headed over to pick it up, only to find out that someone had clearly ran over my shipment with a truck while it was sitting in the yard. They apologized, and explained that this had never happened before. So...they had to re order everything. Their supplier was out of stock of course, so it took another almost 3 weeks until the material came I the second time. So, I finally was able to get it on Friday.

Got the treads installed, it was great to finally be able to walk up them for the first time.

Something has been bothering me about how the railings were going to install this whole time, but I could not put my finger on it. When I finally got the bottom piece placed on there to test fit it, it finally hit me. Because I had to make the first step of the stairs at the same level as the deck, it throws the railing angle off. You can see how high the railing sits on the top post, much higher than the deck rail, and there would be a large gap under it.

After some thought, I'll need to add 2 more posts near the front nose of the top step for the deck railings to attach to. The unfortunate part is that I'll have to add a very short horizontal rail to tie these new posts into the existing posts, so hopefully It doesn't look too silly/too much of an afterthought. If anyone has any other ideas on how to address this, please let me know!

Oh well, live and learn I guess. I've certainly learned a lot building this thing.

I've seen people do that before (add the extra two posts) and I don't think it looked bad. Just more work, of course.

Yeah, I couldn't see any way around it at this point. It ***** I'll have to pull some fascia off as well as the top stair tread to add the posts to add them, but oh well.

Looks great. I'll have to update mine when i finish the railings.

Thanks. Did you end up making your own, or going with a kit?

We are making our own, My wife wanted to do metal wire's but that is not up to code, so I am making railings and stiles. Trying to get some more curb appeal. House nearby just went on market for 255K and sold in a week. Thinking of putting our rental on market as well.

I would mock it up with just one post at the outer edge of the top step. I think that transition would look cleaner.

I picked up a new (to me) vehicle this past weekend. My 2003 Sierra has just about had it... Picked up this 2008 Tundra with 75K on the clock as a replacement. Loving it so far. Got it up on the lift tonight to check it over, and do an oil change. I've always loved the looks of the Tundras, and I started a thread on here asking about them as well. Got some great feedback, so I pulled the trigger.

Congrats on the new ride! That is a great looking truck.

I am envious of your lift. I recently picked up a new to me truck as well but i had to crawl under with Jack stands to change fuel filters etc and what a pain!

Nice ride.
It's great having a lift to do your own inspections and oil changes.

Thanks! The lift has been a godsend. The worst part of working on a vehicle for me is always getting the jacks and jack stands out, and crawling around under the car. I still get a smile on my face every time I put a vehicle up there!
