Looks great.

Did you put a pan under the washer? Unfortunately, I think it won't be of much help unless you have a drain on it to remove the water. Any decent leak would flood it pretty quickly.

Gotta make due with what we have! I have been there too.

I did not, for that reason. I checked them out at Home Depot. They're only an inch or so deep. Once it filled up, with a good leak, it wouldn't provide much help like you said.

One final shed update.. after letting the PT get baked out for a while (the shed is in direct sunlight most of the day) I finally got some stain down on the ramp. As you can see, whatever my wife planted on either side never really took haha. Those will be ripped out soon.

I agree haha and at home I have a gravel driveway so working at home is hard but I have to cause right now we are not allowed to bring our personal vehicles in our shop at work for any reason which I think is stupid.

Took about a week of occasional reading, but finally made it up to date! You've done a fantastic job not only tackling the things that needed to be done but also creating your own projects to completely revamp/facelift the property. I grew up in Boston and my folks now live on the northeast side of Mt. Washington so I kept appreciating your I-93 sign in the garage.

Look forward to seeing what else you take on... hopefully something along the lines of a project not necessarily on or for the garage, but just inside it :bounce:

Thank you very much for taking the time to read through it all! That's cool you're from the area. I'd love to move to the lakes region someday. That reminds me, I need to hang that sign back up. I pulled all my signs down when I had to re-organize the garage layout to add the door into the addition, and I never hung them back up.

And yes, that is the plan. Now that we're almost through the house projects, I'll need something new to focus my efforts on. Just need to decide which direction I want to go in with a car project when the time comes.

I finally found an excuse to work on something in the garage instead of around the house. My bumper was pretty rotten on my truck. I didn't get a before photo, but I had a softball sized rust spot poking through the chrome on the front face of the bumper. The factory hitch is actually built into the bumper assembly, and I could not find a well made replacement that offered the same setup aside from the OEM Toyota ($$$$). So, I had to order a bumper and standalone hitch separately. The new bumper is a "diamond standard" brand built to meet or exceed OEM. The cheap thin ebay chrome replacements do not last up here with the salt, so this was important.

Old bumper coming off. I finally found anohter excuse to use the transmission jack that has been collecting dust in the corner for years.

New bumper and hitch in place. I need to order a few parts to get my trailer wiring plugs back in pace still, but the hard part is over. It was a bit of a balancing act replacing it without a second set of hands.

Been awhile since I checked in and I’m glad I did. The bathroom looks great. I’ll be doing another one soon as well, but I keep putting it off.

The Tundra looks great! That lift sure is nice!

Looks good!!!
My F-150 bumper is rusting in a similar way to yours, been too cheap and lazy to replace right now though.

Thanks! Yeah, it started as a dime sized rust spot and kept growing over the last 1-2 years that I've been putting it off as well. I've spent some time freshening up the truck of the last few months though (new plugs, all fluids changed, new exhaust, tires, replaced rusty lug nuts, and now the bumper and hitch). It just rolled 100K miles, and I am hoping to keep it for another 2-3 years at least.

Thank you! The lift is the best tool that I have invested in for sure. It has paid for itself a few times over.

I'm at similar point on my 2012 too, plugs, fluids, brakes etc. Did you just add the mud flaps? Mine doesn't have any and wondering if that would help prevent the rust if/when I replace or have it stripped and painted.

It's crazy how much a little work makes them like new again.

Thanks!

The mud flaps were on the truck when I bought it. I don’t think they would do much to help in preventing rust very much though.

I snapped a quick photo of the old bumper before I brought it to the dump yesterday. Yuck.

Thanks everyone! Yes, the wife is happy. She picked it all out so she better be haha. Last bathroom update: I got the mirror and light fixture up yesterday, cut and reinstalled the basebord, hooked up the supply lines for the faucet, and got the p trap in place for the drain. It’s 99% done now, just a few odds and ends to bang out and it’s done!

Thanks will take a look at it. Yeah, nice piece but that's out of my budget. I'll have to finish the one I looked at the other day.

So I ended up banging out another quick project. I did a few updates to the upstairs bathroom as well. When I first moved in, I painted the walls and original vanity, installed a new granite top/faucet and put up a new mirror and cabinet over the toilet.. and that was it. It had a similar white porcelain tile to what was downstairs.

Since I had almost one entire box of the LVP I installed in the downstairs bath left over, I ordered one more box for upstairs and decided to do the same floor up there as well since it still matched reasonably well with the color scheme. I also installed new lights, new shower curtain rod, replaced all the base trim, installed new fixtures in the tub, gave the vanity a fresh coat of paint, replaced the toilet, and replaced the baseboard heater cover. I really wanted to replace the vanity as well, as I am loving the comfort height vanity I put in downstairs, but it wasn't in the budget right now. The beauty of the click-lock flooring is it's so easy to remove, so when the time does come to replace it, I can take it back a few rows, and lay more down right under where the new vanity will go seamlessly with very little waste.

No before pics (sorry) but here is the end result. The only other thing I would like to do is eventually build an in-wall medicine cabinet behind the existing mirror for some extra storage.

Nice work Roboto, looks great. I think you saw in my thread the recessed medicine cabinet I made... it was pretty easy! We also have a store bought one. I'd totally recommend for some extra storage of small things that looks clean and doesn't eat into the footprint of a smaller space.

Thanks Nick! Yes, I did see it. It came out great! This is our main bathroom, with not much storage, so any little bit certainly helps. We have a small cabinet above the toilet, but it's at capacity.

Happy New Year everyone! Been mostly quiet over here.... but I did finally pick up a new project to work on IN the garage finally.

1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L 4X4. Quick shot I took gassing it up on the ride home this evening:

attachment.php

Some backstory: I owned a 1998 5sp Cherokee Sport in college, and up through must of the beginning of my adult life. I purchased it as a cheap vehicle to learn how to drive standard, and to not take the Monte Carlo I had back then into Boston where I was going to college at the time, but I absolutely fell in love with it. I loved fixing it, modifying it, improving it, and learned so much in the process. It's really what got me interested in working on cars. It also really got me into the outdoors (mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding etc) since it was a capable vehicle for getting me to/from all of those activities. One of those life changing purchases, as silly as it sounds to say that about a car. I took it all the way up to 240K miles. After a year of owning my house, I really needed a pickup truck, and at the time, needed the money from the sale of the jeep to put towards that. So, I sold it in 2013 and have regretted it ever since. Here are photos of my old Jeep. Some of my slight modifications had been uninstalled at this point as I had pulled them off to sell it, but this is pretty much how it sat. Most of the work I did was mechanical anyways. Also, looking back at these photos... damn, my house and garage have come a long way since then! My garage is still just studs in these pics.

attachment.php

attachment.php

I've really been wanting another one to tinker with, and maybe take a little further than the old one since it's not my daily driver anymore. I've been having a hard time deciding if I miss owning it for all the memories I had with it, or if I truly liked the vehicle. Figured the only way to find out was to buy another one.

Been passively looking for the past few years all over New England. This one popped up the other day, a mere 10 minutes from my house, on a day I was off from work. After talking to the owner, he gave me his address, and it turns out the house he lives in was one I also put an offer in on back in 2012 when I was looking to buy my first house.... small world. Kind of a sign that it was meant to be? There is a list of things wrong with it, but most are typical XJ issues. The jeep is very rust free compared to most up here (it was purchased in NJ, which probably helped a little)

My plans for it are to fix all of the issues with it and drive it stock for a while. If I don't enjoy it now as much as I did back then, I will sell it and probably make a profit on it, depending on how far I take the repairs/restoration. I can definitely break even at the very least. If I do like it, the plan is to do a 3.5" lift and some 31" tires, as well as some other mods I always wished I had done to my old Jeep (rear disc conversion, front and rear off-road bumpers, lighting, etc) and just enjoy reliving my "glory days" with an XJ.... time will tell!

Thanks for tuning in to my life story, as it pertains to Jeeps

Nice find, I had one of those for about a year when I was stationed in Saudi. Great vehicle, fast fun dependable and we went everywhere with it and got it stuck numerous times in the sand

Roboto that is awesome! I've never driven one, but aesthetically I really have a soft spot for those older Cherokees. And boxy 90's cars in general. It just looks so clean and capable and heavy-duty. Love the long hood. A good-looking car in my book.

Great story to go with it, too, thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about memories vs. the car -- my first car was a 1993 Toyota Camry... nothing to write home about... but being my first car I still loved it for what it was and all the good times with it.

My gut is you will like the "new" one for all the reasons you liked your old one. And if you give it a fair chance, there will be new memories to bolster what I think is already a cool car.

Please post up some of the mods as you get to them, looks like a fun side project!

Thanks man! Thanks for reading through the story too. Sounds like you have similar memories with your car. One memory I want to re-create is taking this Jeep on the dunes down in cape cod. When I first me my wife, we did this and had a ball. Her parents actually live down there now, so it would be a blast to re-create this as a family with our daughter. I dug up these photos of when we last did it in 2010-ish

I went with a 4.5” X-Series kit from Rough Country, 33” Falken Wildpeak’s. All new springs, shocks, sway links, extended brake lines....all of it. Custom built bumper and tire swing, onboard air...the list goes on. I enjoyed the build, and liked how it came out. I just never came to like the way it drove (very “wandery” at any speed over 45). Also, I found I really wanted more room. In the end, I sold it and moved onto a 2002 Sequoia. I’m a Toyota guy, and this Sequoia is one nice vehicle!

Can’t wait to see your progress on the XJ!

Pulled the jeep in to start picking away at it. It tucked away nicely in this corner. It will be nice to leave it here so I can work on it as time permits, and still be able to park our daily drivers in the garage. Also..... my garage is a mess.

One of the reasons I was able to get it for a low price was that it had been sitting for a year (started every month and driven around the block still) but the mice got into it. none of the interior lighting worked, as well as the radio and 2 speakers. I had been in the wiring of my old jeep enough to feel confident that I could fix it, so I got to work.

Dash and lower kick panel/fuse box came apart:

I found 6 wires, chewed clean through, like this:

Lighting operational again!

The previous owner also added these LED headlights. They're actually a nice set that is DOT approved with a proper cut off to not blind oncoming cards. However, he didn't take the time to wire up the DRL "angel eye" feature, so I did that as well.

Finally, I picked up a set of 17" JK Wrangler wheels to swap over to it. This was a very popular swap back in the day, and one that I always wanted to do. However, these wheels were still very new back then, and sold for big bucks ($500-$600). I picked up this clean (muddy, but in good clean shape) set off of craigslist with junk tires for a mere $100 bucks.

My dad works at a dealership, and he always has an assortment of slightly used "take-offs" kicking around. He scored me a free set of Michelins with 2000 miles on them that will mount up to the new rims, that match the stock Cherokee tire diameter. I am going to mount those for now so I can get up and running and through inspection. Planning to fix all the rest of the issues and drive it stock for a while while I decide weather or not to keep it and lift it. There is a tipping point where I could still sell it for a profit if I decide to bail on it, but once I start investing in larger tires, lift ect then I will be in the red.... which is OK too.

Here is what else I identified prior to purchase that needs to be done:

- New exhaust from the cat back (probably either going to get the Flowmaster FlowFx or Banks Monster)

- Valve Cover Gasket

- Front Brakes

-Neutral Safety Switch either needs to be repaired or replaced.

- Evap Leak (I think I already found the source of this)

- New Radio (the aftermarket one put in is literally a $25 dollar piece of garbage. I did not even know you could buy a $25 dollar radio until I looked this up)

- Rear end is noisy. They all are, to some extent, but this one is worse than usual. It unfortunately has the dana 35, so I may try and locate a Chrysler 8.25 to rebuild on the side and then swap in.

Were you able to find another 5 speed? I hear they are pretty rare. Also, I can't see any pics from your last post this morning.

Congrats on the new toy, man! Looks like a solid one, which (as you know) is tough to find these days!

And like the last poster, I also cannot see your photos.

No, this one is an automatic, unfortunately. They are very hard to find these days for sure.

Thank you! Does your dad still have his as well?

Try now, I think I fixed the photos

Yep, I see them now! And yes he does. He won't get rid of it for a long time. The body is in such great condition, he has no reason to. If the engine ever dies, he'll have it rebuilt! ha

Do those wheels go right on, or is an adapter needed? My dad wants to upgrade his wheels eventually and based on the little research I did, I thought most Wrangler wheels would require an adapter to fit on his Cherokee.

Yes, you do need an adapter. The XJ is 5X4.5 and the YJ wheels are 5X5. I think these are the adapters that I will be ordering later today. I just want to manually measure the backspacing on both sets so I can get the stance I want by getting the right thickness. From what I gather, 1.25" should get me there.

EDIT, ^^ DO NOT BUY FROM THESE CLOWNS.^^ They took my $$ and never shipped a damn thing. I had to file a paypal dispute to get my money back.

I just dug back through your thread to find the pics/price your dad got his for. He absolutely stole that thing. Mine is not as immaculate as his. I see he has the steel wheels now - an update would be nice for sure. Even the factory Cherokee alloys (the ones mine came with) would really look great on there.

Love it! I have had around 10 XJ's over the years! Loved every one of them. Unstoppable in the snow up here. I'd love to pick up another XJ, but as you already know they are pretty hard to find these days in the NE without being rotted out. Plus I'm having a hard time justifying another vehicle when my wife and I both work from home and have 4! lol I have regretted selling my last one which was a spotless 99 Classic from NJ! I used to do Jeep Jamborees and Camp Jeep every year!

Pictures are working ok now!

I'm not a fan of off roading, I've always been on the race car side of being a gear head; but ever since I moved to a more rural city, I've been second guessing myself about what my next build should be (if I ever get there, lol). Love these kind of old school Cherokees (and I have to admitt I do have the itch for a Samurai, old Jimny, Feroza or Vitara Sidekick). Please keep us updated on what you do to it!

Damn, a year ago I had an entire 96 XJ you could have picked over for parts, including a C8.25! I donated it to KFK. I took the engine, but the rest was there....

Looking forward to following the build.

Awesome! After 10 of them, you must really know them like the back of your hand now.

Think you'll have a blast with a little 4x4. It will open you up to a whole new world.

Damn, that would have been nice. The D35 in this has to go!! I forget if I mentioned it but I'd like to pick up a new axle on the side and rebuild it and so a disc conversion. My build will probably be tame by most standards initially, but I hear it's a slippery slope haha.

The previous owner had this thing loaded up with moth balls to attempt to keep the mice out of it while it was sitting. it obviously didn't work. The odor was very strong, so I've been letting it air out in the garage for the last 2 weeks with all the doors open to let the smell dissipate. As the moth ball smell disappeared, the all too familiar smell of a dead rodent started to set it. I noticed some discoloration on the headliner by where the rear speaker pods hang down that looked like urine, so there was a good chance this is where his nest was. I have had the rest of the interior apart by now, so this was also the last place he could have been, so out came the headliner.

attachment.php

Sure enough, there he was, in the rear speaker pod. Edited the photo for the weak

attachment.php

Made a mess up there. The plastic speaker pod insert should clean up just fine, but I think I am going to scrape the headliner backer down and replace the headliner material due to the staining.

One positive: I was still tracking down an intermittent loss of power/repetitive IOD fuse blowing. I discovered what I hope is the last of the chewed wiring:

attachment.php

I replaced the section. This wire was shorting out against the roof, blowing the fuse. Everything seems good now finally.

attachment.php

It really feels nice to be working on a car project again in the garage, rather then messing with never ending house projects.

attachment.php

Getting my freebie tires mounted up to the 17" wrangler wheels, and hope to have those test fit on the car this weekend if my adapters come in time. New brakes are in finally too, so I will do those, and possibly tackle the valve cover gasket. At that point, hopefully all I need to pass inspection is the new exhaust, but the one I want is backordered until 1/20.
