Hello,
I recently picked up this Rock Island Bench Vise #604 and I can't find any information on-line about it. If anybody has a date this vise was produced, it's value etc. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Joan
I keep looking for vises on Craigslist based on the advice on this forum. I do wonder about the values quoted on here. I just saw a version of this vise available locally (Denver area) and it is priced at $115. That seems to be the trend. Values here seem to be multiplied by 2-5X for our local craigslist.
Sorry to pull a thread from the dead but just an interesting observation. Anyone else have this trouble?
Hemi: you are asking members that might own more than a few vises and we probably wouldn't need a vise or pay full value so probably a good idea to do your own research about vise (vice) prices.
also if you want to become a member and ask more questions and share your insight and knowledge it might help if you went in your GJ profile and put in your location. while you are in there click on Avatar and download one of your favorite pictures that you might like seeing under your handle like where my Bison is that is welded together with old tools and scraps.
welcome
also there might be 20 manufacturers that made that style of vise that is very light duty for a pre 1950's vise so not something most of us members like or search for hence maybe the low value. they will work as a vise though and better made than a lot or most of the imports so i'd probably buy it before i bought an import if i NEEDED A VISE. also if you notice this thread is 2 years old so as years pass the pre WWII vises get older and more valuable
That's normal Craigslist shenanigans. People are always asking 5x what things are really worth. Every so often a deal comes along and then you buy.
The value quoted at the top of this post is the current observed conditions in the mid Atlantic region. You can barely give those open screw vises away.
I did a quick search for some of these era small open.screw vises. They were just on ebay, and they ran the gamut from 15 to abit over 100....from barn find.dust buckets to.full restorations....and of course shipping is extra for the 20 odd pounds.....everyone thinks they have some super rare crown jewel on the higher ends....keep looking for that prize and it will turn up at a good price.
Thanks, everyone. Good to see the activity and commentary.
I'm on the lookout for a good quality used vise based on advice in other threads that recommend older vs. new. I am open to restoring or doing a good clean up but am not seeing much over the last few months. I am starting to lean towards just buying new. Still learning good brands and researching everything before considering a purchase.
Be patient. These things seem to come in waves. I will go months without seeing anything worthwhile and then without warning I hit pay dirt half dozen times in 24 hours.
