I got this Rock Island Lines Cross Peen Hammer today. Curious if anyone knows if it was for the rail road or if they sold tools with the name? It's a nice, heavy hammer

MOST railroad tools are marked with the reporting marks (CRIP or CRI&P in the case of the Rock Island) as opposed to the nickname.

It has to be railroad used.

I do agree with Shanny, often you see the abbreviation on tools, but looking around shows this RR used multiple ways of marking their name on tools.

Searching the name on Ebay current listings shows an old shovel marked RI LINES.

Ebay completed listings has a hatchet stamped with the full name just like your hammer.
