Rock Island No 74 vise?

This is for sale for 50 bucks close to me. Are these vises worth it? Looks a lot like My Reed.

Thanks

That one has seen plenty of action. It has non replaceable jaws but can still be used as is. Also look for any cracks, repairs and give the main nut a look to be sure it's not damaged. You have to remove the dynamic jaw to look at it.

The short answer is, yes, Rock Island vises are high quality and 50 bucks is a decent buy.

yea the guy says it functions well, swivels fine, and there are not cracks and jaws are in good shape. Its around an hour away, just trying to decide if its worth the drive.

Thanks guys

They always tell you that until you get up close and really give it a proper inspection. Make sure you trust but verify.

As for the ride, I live in a rural area. I often have to drive and hour or more to haul home good stuff. I've learned to appreciate the nice ride instead of considering it a hassle.

If everything is as the seller says they are, this vise will clean up beautifully. You can't beat a good Rock Island vise. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This one started its life with the US Navy during WWII, dated 9-44. It worked in the munitions plant in Washington D.C.
