That is certainly an unusual model Rock Island you have there.
I bet the 1917 is the year of manufacture and not the model number. I have never seen or heard of RI model numbers with 4 digits.
Rock Island experts might have some reliable answers.
For better exposure, why not repost your photos over in the main vise thread.
If you have LOTS of extra time, you can go back on that thread and catch up on the previous 63 thousand posts.

Well it looks exactly the same as the standard British type quick release vice, the quick release handle should be rotated 180 degress, so that it dosent stick down and when you activate it it is against the spindle.

Yes, post in the Vises of Garage Journal thread under the General Tool section.

I had an old mini-vise posted by itself in the Vintage section and nobody could help. One of the major contributors to the Vintage Tools suggested I post it in the vise thread. Not only was it quickly identified, but also got copies of the patent, the mfr's list of model numbers, and a copy of a 1917 newspaper ad showing the vise. Amazing.

I was told many of the vise thread gurus do not even look in the Vintage section, and a few might not pay much attention to any other threads.

Give it a go. Highly recommended.

Is it possible that Rock Island bought English vises for their export models? Looks very much like my Record 23.

I believe that is the first RI quick release vise I've seen. Here's one pic out of several of the same model vise on a photobucket page labelled "British Made Vice Manufacturers".(??)

My initial guess is that (as others have indicated above) at some time Rock Island had a small number of vises made and private labelled by one of the British makers of that particular style vise: Record, Paramo, Woden, and I believe at least one more brand.

Parkinson, Fortis, Ajax (Herbert's brand, I believe).

Fretters:
Thanks for contributing your knowledge of the English vices.
That is certainly an unusual one...with the Rock Island markings.

I have a RI 595 a friend gave me almost 20 years ago. He used to do house/garage junk haul-offs in college, and hauled a bunch of **** out of a garage of an abandoned house. He dropped by one day and asked if I wanted it, to which I gladly accepted. I've broken two workbenches from serious pipe-wrenching on it, but have never even slightly tweaked the vise. It's probably 80-100 pounds itself.

It looks like it may be a WWI Parkinson Pattern, made by Rock Island for the Allies. I'd agree with others about "1917" being the year of manufacture.

Checkout the 1920 catalog scans for more details.

Hi. I’ve just acquired one these vices. My problem is it’s missing the quick release mechanism. It’s almost identical to the no 22 record vice (4inch jaws). I can find a quick release mechanism kit available for the no 23 record vice (4 1/2 inch jaws) on a UK website. does anybody know if this will fit? My lead screw diameter is 20mm (3/4) and the centres between the two screws at the front of the vice that hold the mechanism in place are 53mm centres.
