RockSolid Flooring Question

Hello all,

I went with a professionally applied RhinoFloor on my attached garage which is awesome. I don't have the budget to do the same for my new detached garage.

I just got my new garage floor poured today. After my garage is finished and the cement is cured (30 days) I plan on installing RockSolid. No sealant was added to the finished cement.

I wanted to ask the pros if the safe etch solution with the kit is all the prep needed for the concrete? If anyone with RockSolid experience could chime in I would appreciate it. I don't want to have to rent a grinder for the new floor if I can avoid it. I also don't want the floor to fail because of poor prep.

Thanks, Mike

Hasn't this been done to death? Isn't everyone going to say grinding is better and do it to be safe? Sure there may be others who express a different view but it's the same discussion everytime this comes up. There is nothing special about the specific coating you're talking about applying. If you really want to, as you say, not worry about it coming up, you should grind even though there are plenty of people (including me years ago) who got by fine just etching.

I would say if it is hard troweled then etch it. Since its new I dont think it would need
grinding. You could do a small area 6" x 6" to check the bond to give yourself peace of
mind.

Thanks. It was troweled with machine. The instructions and warranty seem to support etch only.

I'm just a DIY'r too, not an expert.. but...

You can acid etch, but you may have to repeat the acid etch a few times until the floor is rough all over. I did it, it was rough, but spots were not. I had to repeat a few times. I also used it quite strong. I noticed the last time I did it that parts that were already rough did not react with the acid much if any. The darker smooth spots foamed up when acid hit it.

Acid etch it, but do it well, probably several times.

I am not a fan of acid etching in the DIY market. That said if you achieve the desired profile AND follow the 'post acid etching' routine I would imagine you would be in good shape.

I will personally never prep a floor any way other than grinding.

acid will not penetrate and etch well enough on a hard troweled floor. Whoever tells you different should give you their warranty on paper. Have it diamond grinded and cleaned well of dust. Good luck

I was DIY'er with rocksolid on a 90 day old floor. No stains and still very clean. I followed their instuctions with the acid etching, and mine came out fine. Its been down about 15 months and not one single problem with mine, and still looks great.

Do you have any pics of your floor?

I'm a Rocksolid DIY'er as well and echo what kywildcat said. My concrete was approx. 90 days old and I acid etched only, no grinding. I will say that I was a little disappointed with the acid etch that came with the Rocksolid kit. It didn't seem to fizz as much as the other acid etch that I bought at Lowe's. Nonetheless, my floor is doing great. I have abused it much more than I should have and it keeps coming back for more. Not a single scratch or scrape in the entire floor (24'x32'). Since you requested pics, here ya go:

Looks great dlc. Did you get the basic DIY kit or did you add clear? Also are you parking your car on carpet squares for a reason?

Thanks, Mike

No clear, just the basic kit. The floor was just a couple of days old when that picture was taken. I didn't want to take any chances so I parked the car on cardboard squares. I don't do that any longer.

It has been done to death. However, everyday we get new folks on the forum who are unsure and so it's like groundhog day for those of us that stick around.

It's worth repeating.

With the sale going on at menards I'm seriously thinking about biting the bullet and giving this a shot. I've been planning on using epoxy but this seems like a nice alternative. Any tips on prepping a few oil spots? I also noticed that it's self leveling, will this pose a problem with my sloped floor and drains? How well does it work with a broom finished floor?

I bought three grey kits at Menards. As soon as the concrete fully cures I will be coating with your product. I will post pics up when complete. :rocker:
