My Dad doesn't have use for his Rockwell 1" Sander Grinder anymore so he passed it along to me. I remember using it as a kid and found it to be a handy tool

Anyway, I need to repair the wheels somehow as the pics show. Can the outer elastomer (or whatever it is) just be removed? I may have to add some sort of "traction" back on the wheels. Plastidip perhaps? Other concern is the belt being to large once the elastomer is stripped off. Or am I looking at a new set of wheels?

Guess the only way to know is to tear the elastomer off and experiment. Figured I'd ask though in case someone's already been down this road :)

To replace the tires you ca get cutoff pieces of hose of the right size from an industrial supply or even stretch a piece of inner tube over them.
Use rubber cement to hold them on

Pretty sure there is a guy over on OWWM making replacement wheels for those, think he was even making some whole sanders at one point.

I had my brother make some aluminum wheels for mine. Replaced all of the old ****** plastic wheels, works great.

I've owned several of those sanders, and have one on my bench. You can even remove the old urethane and replace it with masking tape---just remember to wrap it clockwise so it doesn't unravel.

Thanks guys! Some good ideas

Think I'll try the intertube idea first. Should be able to fit a regular bicycle tube on the 2" wheels. For the 3 1/2" wheels, my favorite hobby just so happens to be motorbikes. I should have a old tube laying around...
