I recently picked up this real nice Rockwell belt grinder/sander
I gave its quick clean up and all I need now is belts for it. I am going to use it for metal work.
Where is the best place to get these and what grit is suggested?

May I suggest that you go to one of the major suppliers sites and study a bit. Norton is one of the major players, 3M is another. Find out what abrasive material works with the metal you are working with, what grit gives you the finish you desire, etc. There is a whole science behind question you ask, and not one belt is going to do everything. Also pick up a scotchbright type belt to polish and remove rust.

first you have to know what length of belt it uses. 30"and 42" are common sizes, IIR.

You also appear to be missing a guard, so be looking into either a replacement, or making one...

The standard belt size is 1x42. I use 60 grit for most everything. Good to see you have the wheels intact. The outer plastic coating tends to come off with age and you then usually need to replace the wheels. This is a common enough problem that there is a man who makes replacement wheels (and all the other parts). Look on ebay for a seller named "flwbass" (no quotes). His e-mail address is [email protected]. I purchased a set of replacement wheels from him and was quite happy. As far as I know, this version of the sander never had a guard. Later ones did however.
