I recently completed a project to attach a drum switch to my drill press (Rockwell #15-665), which I achieved by mounting a metal plate between the motor and the drill press body.
Now that I have re-installed the motor and added the belt, I am unable to lock the motor back to the body with the motor tension knob. Underneath the knob is a square washer. I have tried tightening that washer up on the screw, and also tightening it all the way against the body. In either case I am able to turn the knob, but the motor doesn't seem to lock against the body, no matter how hard I tighten the knob. It remains springy, which I think means the spring is still working, but I can't figure out how to stop it. I have tried adding lubricant to unblock the screw under the knob but I'm not sure if that did anything. Can someone explain to me the mechanism at play here and what I might be doing wrong?
I believe it used to be locked against the body, but admittedly I've taken it apart and been working on it and haven't used it much since I bought it so it's possible this mechanism never worked.
