What can you all tell me about it? The motor is a Delta made in USA. Cast iron table with sheet steel extensions. Comes with fence, miter gauge, and no blades. They are asking $250. Worth it or not?
I have a Delta contractors saw with a cast iron top. It does a fine job. Mine might be 30 years old. I say worth it if you can turn it on to see if the motor works.
Great saw, I've got a model 10 built in '87. So long as it still runs smooth and all the adjustments work properly it should serve you well. Mine came with a Unifence which I really like. I've heard a few gripes about the standard Jet-Lock fence (with the round rails) though. If you're looking for a fence upgrade, I've heard that the Beisemeyer fence system is even better than the Unifence for about the same price.
Older Craftsman ones like that go for under $200, sometimes as low as $100.
For $250, you should get a belt drive model with 2 cast iron extensions, a couple of blades and maybe even a dado set. The top would be rusty, but some steel wool and WD40 will make it look like new.
It is a belt drive. I am going to be looking at a Delta Contractor 10" which I guess is a newer version of the Rockwell. The guy is asking $200 for it and it comes with some extra blades and a dado along with a few other things. He won't be back from vacation until the 14th. I looked at a couple of Craftsman saws this weekend. The guy wanted $280 a piece for them and they were pretty rough. Nowhere near as good as the ones in the pictures.
I used a Delta/Rockwell in a production shop and it served me very well. Wish I hadn't sold it. The only downfall to your deal is that the fence isn't upgraded. You can find them around that price with a retro fit Beismeyer which is the cat's ***. Buying a Beismeyer outright will cost nearly as much as the saw.
Don't get me wrong, I used the standard fence and did nice work. You ain't going through 2' hardwood w/o a struggle though. That's why they call them a contractor's saw. Not much 2" hardwood out on the jobsite.
Around here you usually pay less than $100 for a table saw, although most of those are crummy direct drive lightweight ones. There's the occasional belt drive cast iron one though.
The model 10 is the best contractor style saw made by Delta IMHO. The only one I have seen that is heavier is the old US made Powermatic 63 before the Artisan line came out. The wings can be replaced with cast iron wings as they are exactly the same as the Unisaw wings. $250 is cheap. Which fence? If it is the round rail fence you will likely want to upgrade it eventually. If it is the Biesemeyer, Bies home shop version, or clone then grab it quick. Unlikely to be a Unifence, but not impossible.
