Not since I went all mig and tig 30 years ago. I used to have 2 ancient ColdSpot fridges with the big chrome handle. One for pop and one for rods. The rod oven had a light bulb and a clixon switch instead of a compressor. They were side by side and it was fun to watch the look on people's faces when they pulled the wrong handle and got a face full of hot air.

If you are worried about the weld quality and are storing the rods for long term you might want to look into a rod oven. Short term storage to keep clean and dry, get a 4" pvc pipe, solvent/glue, some pipe caps, some threaded cleanouts and threaded plugs and make your own. I made up a few and melted the rod type info into the tube with a soldering iron.

I use my MIG very often and seldom have the need to go to my stick machine. So I don't go through many rods.

We keep a vacuum packer machine in the kitchen to pack meats and such.
I vacuum pack my rods.
I just seal the same all together and open the pack when I need some and then reseal.
Make the bag big enough when starting. ;)

I've had no problems doing this, but you have to have the handy vacuum machine.

The HF rod keepers work well. They have a '' O '' ring collar . Use 20% off coupon and get two.

Another cheap rod storage system is to simply put the rod into a suitable metal tool box and also lay a corded incandescent light bulb inside for heat. 20 pounds of rod isn't that much and cheap tool boxes are all over ebay. I found a great vintage hand made metal box for my rod.

Not sure what the OP has for rod, but those tubes work real well. The rod ovens are for 7018 and similar type rods. If the OP has 6010/6011 rod, an oven isn't recommended. The fridge with a bulb in it, is pretty much a waste of electricity.....it doesn't get hot enough for 7018 and for 6013/7014, a rod tube works good, as storage temp only needs to be around 100°F anyways.

Even if the OP has 7018 rod, storing in a tube it fine. I doubt he is doing x-ray quality work..

Here are what the experts say:

My brother in law is a welder and he uses surplus metal ammo boxes to store welding rods in. They seal well and with the handle on top they are easy to pick up and carry with you.
