Any idea what this was used for?

Hehe, since it was laying on the side it looked to me like a gigantic handrail for a sasquatch therefor the reference of handrail on steroids.

Definitely a log home "log". Makes for an more air tight assembly than traditional chinking.

The cheap, instant gratification log home building material. They’re not that good- have seen a lot of “log cabins” here in the N GA mountains built with that stuff.
