"Roll-Across" doors?

Hi geniuses!

I've just bought a house (hooray!) that only has a carport (what?!?!) that I will immediately be fully enclosing and turning into a proper garage (whew!).

Problem is, the house is of a certain extreme modern architectural style that requires a unique and visually neat-o approach to the problem of the garage door, otherwise the whole look of the house will be messed up...

So what I'm after is a little strange:

A "Roll-Across" coiling door system, similar to the security roll-up doors you see at a Public Storage place, except I need it to operate ON ITS SIDE!

That's right, I need a roll-up door that can be mounted on its side and roll across, not up, coiling up into its container that's mounted like a post at one end of the opening.

God bless the internet and all, but I can't find one anywhere. Anybody ever heard of such a thing?

If I can't find something like this, it's gonna be big "hangar doors" that roll side-to-side on metal tracks, and the problem is that when the hangar doors are open, they would cover up windows and entry doors and stuff. That's why I want a roll-across door that will disappear into its container when "open".

Ideas? Am I insane? Thanks!

One of my local post offices "fences off" their stamp area when closed with a hard accordian style door. The top has a horizontal roller track, the bottom has holes every 3-4 feet or so where a thick pin / dowel slides down in to the floor. The one at the post office is clear acrylic, but I don't see why it couldn't be made of other materials. It tucks away in a closet when they slide it open.

Not sure where to find or get it, but obviously someone makes it.

Why not consider using A "Roll-Across" coiling door system on its side? They look so flimsy that it shouldn't matter which way it is turned.

These doors are common in Europe, never seen them in the states though. The reason I mention it is just to let you know its possible. I have seen both where the door rolls up into a coil at one wall and also where the tracks follow one wall so the door slides up against the wall, like a standard door if it followed the ceiling but on its side.

Dont know where you would find one in the States, never seen it.

Viola. Do a web search for "side coiling door". There are numerous manufacturers. Essentially, they are the same grille doors that you see in front of stores at the mall but they are made with slats in lieu of grilles.

Your looking at several thousand dollars for a motorized slide grille even over a thousand for a 12' wide manual sliding door. Not too mention they are not insulated. I'd go with an overhead a 12'x 8' would be less than a thousand insulated.

Or just make your own swinging doors like a wall and put wheels on the corners to take the load off the hinges.

Jimmy, my problem is I can't use an overhead door due to the funkyness and lowness of this carport I'm trying to enclose. Plus, those side-coiling doors can go AROUND CURVES!!!! So, I'm planning (hoping, dreaming) of having one of those side coilers going in a gentle arc, to span a 30-foot-wide opening. It would look SICK!

If I do it, it will take a month or two, but pics will occur.... Thanks for the info... I knew y'all could help!
