Roll up door for kids room

I am decorating my sons room in a garage theme. Right now his closet has no door. The opening is about 6ft wide and 7 ft tall. I want to make some sort of roll up door but it doesn't need to be to the quality and durability of a real roll up door. My original thought was corrugated plastic like they use on green houses but that may be too rigid. Has anyone ever done something like this or have any ideas. Anything would be appreciated.

Oh wait how about like a roll top desk. Wooden track with wooden slats that are held together by cloth strips. They could roll up and then down the back of the closet. Maybe with wheels on the end to make it work smoothly.

That's what I was thinking as well.

The greenhouse plastic will roll up just fine. Just beware that the PVC stuff (the wavy Parlram you see at HD) is kind of brittle. The polycarbonate (the more rectangular Suntuf at HD) is damn near unbreakable, and will roll up nicely. But it only comes in narrow widths. You'd have to come up with some way to roll up a door made of multiple pieces.

As a side note of caution, I like the toolbox, but I would suggest you tie it down in the back. Toolboxes don't have the safety considerations of children's furniture, and even proper children's furniture is known to crush little ones. Opening multiple drawers in a toolbox can crush an adult. Real children's furniture is designed with super low strength drawer glides so that if someone were to attempt to climb on it, the drawer would fall out rather than tip the furniture, etc.

From somebody that used to crawl around in burning buildings....

Non-standard stuff like that scares me. In a fire, it's not unusual for kids to hide in a closet to escape the smoke. Something like a roll-up door of any sort might get skipped or looked over during a hasty search, because it doesn't "look" like a closet or room when you are working your way around by feel only. Worse are the hidden rooms, or kids playrooms with a secret door behind bookcase, etc.

Just something to think about. Stuff doesn't always happen to "the other guy". Sometimes it's you.

How old is your son? How heavy will the door be? I would worry about injury or worse if the door came down on him!!!!
Garage roll up doors have safety features on them.

Look up storage unit doors. I see them come up regularly on Craigslist around here. A 4' door with hardware seems to go for about $100.

My son is 6. I will defiantly tether the toolbox to the wall. I think Wire rope should work. I never thought about a non-standard door being a safety issue in the case of a fire but it makes since. It looks like the closet is really closer to 4 foot wide. My intention was to make it as light as possible for safety. I would be okay with leaving it open most of the time so an adult could open and close it until he got older. I don't want to do a pull chain like real doors as it could be hanging risk. I originally got the idea from pics on google but now looking at them they look like real roll up doors that ate fixed to the wall as headboards.

Speaking of fires, I'd hate to see that foam flooring in a fire.
I would have loved that room as a kid!

Your kid has a nicer tool chest than any i own lol. That should serve him well for years to come, probably the rest of his life. Great looking room.

Sorry no great help on the door... That vette shower curtain is pretty good. Or painted bead board and creative trim on the door too look like a garage door....

good god. I know you want to have cool kid rooms but safety should be first. no matter what material a roll up door of that size will be problems. ditch the whole idea and tell your wife what everyone above is saying. even the toobox is impractical and will get old when you realize all the clothes will be falling down behind the drawers and no way to get them out. make sure your smoke detectors are all working.

I agree with the roll up door but the HF box has removable drawers....

How out a wide window blind with the up and down.....raise and lower....cordage on the side similar to a roll up door. I'm sure you could paint it to make it look like a garage door.

I like the idea of a curtain or shower curtain for the closet door. Maybe something like this?

http://www.cafepress.com/+formula_1...5330&utm_term=pla-170146802410-pid-1326049782

If necessary you could cut it right down the middle, for easier access into the closet. Also, if you are interested in extending the garage theme to the rest of the room, keep in mind that you can get vinyl transfers/wraps of almost anything custom made.

On that note, perhaps you might consider a conventional bedroom dresser, but wrap it in vinyl to LOOK like a toolbox?

I know we might sound like a bunch of old fuddy-duddies, but we are only concerned for the well being of your kids. No matter what you choose, I'm sure that your son will be thrilled with the results (I know I would have)!

Good luck and keep us posted!

My concern would be the "roll up" door coming down on top of my kid.

I know we aren't talking about the exact same thing, but my roll up doors have to be pulled all the way down due to their spring tension. Mine have a better chance of falling UP!

How about a roll up blind, the kind with that works when you pull the bottom lip. They make all sizes and custom also.

I think the roll up door will lose it novelty pretty quick. I like the curtain and painted door ideas. Another idea is to have a sign shop print a door sized panel and just mount it to traditional door/s.

The more I think about it the more I am thinking the shower curtain would be best and easiest solution. I appreciate all of the concerns for my kids safety. My wife and I are both pediatric nurses so we are defiantly advocates of any safety measures weather it be my kids or anyone else's. The main reason I went with the toolbox instead of painting a dresser was I liked the idea of I being something he could keep for his whole life when he outgrows the car themed room he will have a really nice tool box.

Not something I would want to be doing everyday. Grease from the slides on clothes. Drawers stuck. Parent yelling to get ready for school. Kid crying. Uh uh I'd avoid that with a basic kids dresser
