roll up door- pros and cons?

I'm posting this for a friend who is not a member.

he is thinking of putting a roll up door on his shed to maximize interior height. but it is really expensive. I think he said $4k. sounds really high to me.
worth it? recommend better price? other thoughts?
it is in south Denver. BTW

The place who I got my pole building materials from has them for 450 for a 10x10. I found some on craigslist for 200.00.

I got 2 quotes. 1st was $4500. The 2nd was about $2300, installed, with motor and 2 remotes. Basic 14x12.

4k must be a huge door. i just got a rollupdoors direct 16x9 insulated with motor to my house for 2300. still dont have it fully setup with electric opener, but i like it so far

Years ago I purchased a 10 x 16 and a 10 x 10 roll up doors, plus an 8 x 8 used door I got free. These doors are very easy to install, after watching the pros do it. I installed all mine by myself using a small block and tackle at each end.
Doors can be expensive if you don't shop around a bit. I found most places that sell and install doors usually have a few used ones around for cheap.
Don't cheap out and buy the thinner metal sheet roll-up doors, get the heaviest you can find or afford. The larger doors have a tendency to rattle a lot in the wind and can be noisey at times, otherwise these are a good choice, and yes, they are not dust tight.

What size door did they quote him? For that price it had better be a huge door otherwise he should go get another quote. If it's small enough and he's reasonably handy you can get a door from someone like rollupdoorsdirect.com and install it yourself. Doesn't seem hard to do if it's small:

I just looked at the ones below my control room here at work. They are 12 x 14 and made by OverHead Door Co. The big commercial Liftmaster chain drive units are a PITA. OverHead Door is in here working on those things all the time. It seems that they get one fixed and a few days later, one of the others **** out. Other then that and not sealing the weather out real well, they are pretty bullet proof.

I just bought a 10w x 8h door DIY "kit" at Menards for less than $1,000.
Two $20.00/hr guys installed it in less then 4 hrs.

A roll-up door is wonderful for certain situations, like maximizing space. One of the guys from my bowling team has one and he likes it a lot, when it works, but he has had some problems with it opening and closing. For some reason it is kind of finicky at times, maybe because it is an older door and is worn a bit. The newer roll-up doors may be pretty much trouble free.

The biggest problem with roll up doors is no insulation.....hot in summer & cold in winter.....

I am building a 40 x 60 shop right now and have a quote from COSTCO on 12' x 12' insulated sectional garage doors for $1200 each installed with a 10% gift card back...........

I am going to purchase Liftmaster 8500 openers and install them myself.....

Huge difference in quality of coil-up doors. I got a Wayne Dalton double wall insulated door, 12x12. I'm guessing it weighs a ton.

My roller door is 30 years old and I have only replaced the weather seal along the bottom
Its is also electrical driven with a RF remote.
