Probably did not want the sensor at the door opening. So they just pointed them at each other. I did this and had to fix it when I sold my house because it got caught on the building inspection. I found on my Genie openers there was no way to bypass it without actually installing the sensors pointed at each other.
My new Liftmaster Commercial HD unit has several options for how this works and I believe I can opt for a sensor less door close. But for the moment I am opting for the keep finger on button until its all the way down setup.
