Rolling Bench Build

I needed a new short portable heavy duty workstation. I have seen many a fine build on here using Harbor Freight Boxes as the cabinet sections of benches so I decided to go that route.

I bought a couple of the 18 side boxes and 10 of the plastic multi bin "totes" they sell

With steel I had in stock, 4 heavy duty casters and some roll stops from McMastercar I was ready to make sparks

I have a salvaged Stainless top off an old tool box, dusted it off and here it will live. I used some 2 1/2 x 2/1" L Channel for the totes

Welded up a door for the opening on the right

I installed a receiver for the vice mount.

I have a jam bolt that I access through the top to let me lock the vice in any location

I hated the puny hinge I started with on the locker door so I built my own Piano Hinge using a 1/4" rod. (Think I over built it?)

So off to the powdercoater for the frame and I tore down the Harbor Freight boxes and painted them myself.

rearranged the drawers with 9 little ones in one and 4 big ones and a little one in the other cab.

So the frame returns from the PC shop.

Put everything back in it.

now attention to the little stuff.


The top was kinda chewed up so I took my DA to it, with 120 grit paper, once it was pretty much uniform I drew out a 2" by 2" grid on it, then using my 4" grinder I did my best to do a machine turned finish

not terrible really

And the Bench sitting in its new home. (Next to my box it looks kind of tiny)

Took a piece of my big tool box to the paint store, they color matched it in a single stage Urethane.

What angle did you place the plastic totes? Looks a little aggressive. Plans for the dead spot below the totes?

What kind of casters and leveling feet are you using? With the box against the wall is it on feet or the casters (ie - how do you access the feet when pushed against the wall?)

Over built the hinge? Naw. You could drop small cars and that thing and not have to worry. I'm a fan of "over built"

It unloads the front casters when it is on its roll stops but does not lift it more then 1/16 of an inch.

The casters are the 6" ball bearing HD's from Harbor Freight The Roll Stops I sourced from Mc Mastercar

As far as the totes and the angle they live at,...They self store when you slip them in and won't rattle out when I move this bench around. I plan on using it as a mobile work station.

The drawers freely swap. At least they did on mine.

The spacing for all 9 drawers mounts inside the cabs are identical. so you can move them to any location.
