I have a pretty good 4x4 steel welding table that I want to put wheels on . Its never where I want it . I also am thinking about puting a vise on it too . I figure I will be whoopin up on something on it and was wondering what casters would work good and stand up to some heavey at time pounding .

Its in my home shop and not used in a production buisness but I want good and stout and yep. cheap too. LOL Any of you fellas had good luck with a certain type wheel ? Also wondering if I could come up with a way to set it back down on solid legs for pounding and than somehow engage the wheels to move it . I could get by with alot lighter wheels this way .

Truckstops used to have a platform that rolled to a trucks windshield than the wheels were lifted and it sat on solid legs so it wouldn't move around while you washed the windshield .

Just another want so I figured I would see what some of you felllas have come up with . maybe I am way over thinking it and just need to put some cheep wheels on it and be done .LOL,

So , If you want to show off them rolling welding/whoopin tables .

Thanks again , kerr

Since you already have the table buck up for quality type casters. How thick is your table top? I have a 2'x4' welding table with a 1 1/2" thick plate on top. My casters are 4" "decent" quality, but I wish I got industrial/heavy duty ones. I am also cheap, but it's the one thing about the table I regret. It does roll around th shop ok, but it does **** getting it from one side of the shop to the other. My table is probably well over 700 lbs. with my CP 975 table vise and Craftsman series 150 DP.

Sorry about the crappy pic, but definitely get a 5" industrial style caster. Aslo make sure you get casters which have zerk fittings. Check fleebay. You can get a set of 4 for about $50. Well worth it IMO. Your back will thank you.

The "swivel" brand tool boxes have a pedal that allows you to raise and lower the box from being on wheels to being solid. A guy at our shop has one. I could look closer at it to see what their mechanism is.

I was going to build a portable primary welding table for our shop, then we ended up buying a really nice one at an auction. Problem is that it weighs well over 3,000lbs, and is 10x5x1.5". After living with it not being portable, I've realized we have no need to have it portable. Its setup in a semi-dedicated welding area now and the rare instances we need to move it, a big skid steer does the trick.
