Few years ago, I bought a couple of the Craftsman hobby centers on sale for $80 each near Christmas. I decided to make a mobile worksurface out of them, so I welded up an angle steel frame to place both of them into, then built a Corian solid surface top to go on it. My friend has a countertop business, and gives me some tearouts. This is what I ended up with.

Corian seems like it'd make a great work surface. Especially if you can get free!

How sturdy is the unit when used with a BFH? How well do the wheels lock?

Good grab.
My inlaws had a solid surface in their kitchen that had some issues with hot items being placed on it where it would crack.
Not sure of the brand but somthing to keep in mind if you weld on it.

I have two roll around work tables.
One with a Formica top and one with just plywood.
I want a piece of Formica to replace the plywood.
I have a buddy that works for a kitchen upgrading outfit.
He can't get me a 4 foot piece of light colored Formica!
Even on the tear outs he is doing he his tearing out Corian.

In answer to all above:

The bench is 34" tall, as are most all the work surfaces in my shop. This makes working with long items much easier, as you can figure out. I don't beat or weld on the bench as I have an 8 foot by 4 foot welding table, 1/2" thick, with a large Columbian vise on it. It is in the picture's background. The wheels are two swivel and two caster 4", and the casters have locks. I rarely lock them for my purposes. The unit would accept a Craftsman/Atlas 12inch swing lathe, but be aware that on a lathe, a rigid, fixed, leveled bench is required for maximum accuracy, due to bed ways twist on an uneven surface. This makes it hell to turn a nontapered shaft, especially if the tailstock is in play.

Well, my man, the answer seems obvious! Get some Corian. The top of the bench I built would have been around $400 fabbed out of new Corian. My cost, a little time with a router and saw.
