Roloc Disc

I am very new to sheet metal work. I tried Roloc discs to clean the sheet metal of paint and to grind the welds down. I like them, much more control than a 4 1/2" grinder. I am at a loss on the type of discs to use though. I would like to buy a big box of them from Amazon cheaper than buying them a few at a time in town. One for surface prep for weld and one for grinding welds down. Thanks for the help guys.

I use them to strip paint as well. Look at it like sandpaper, your going to need a selection of "grits". Might as well bite the bullet and pick up 3-4 different ones.

Don't forget the ones with the Scotchbrite type pads, those are awesome!

Roloc discs are something once you use, you wonder how you did things before them. Stock up on the sanding and scotchbrite ones.

It'll be a small investment to get your initial stock at first but once you do, replacing them as you use them isn't bad. I prefer the 2" over the 3".

Lehight Valley Abrasives have good prices on them. I like the 36 or 50 grit disks to remove surface rust and mill scale fast.

I would echo the above and also recommended stepping up in grit(higher).

The 36 and 60 grit remove material damn fast. I almost prefer 80 or 120 unless I am in a huge time crunch and presentation of final product isnt important

Please link to these bulk packs for a "few bucks". I guess a few bucks has different meanings to different guys because the cheapest bulk packs I saw were 25-35 bucks on amazon. That's about 5-7 times my definition of a few bucks!

I have been getting my roloc discs at the local auto parts store, where they sell them individually, in both sandpaper and scotchbrite. Now that I've used a few of those, I know which ones work specifically for the sort of projects I do and I plan to buy them online in bulk.

I have been using the scotch brite ones to remove old gasket material from pans, pumps ect. Gotta be real careful not to get carried away though, I need to get some of the bristle ones.

Ditto what everyone else said except for one thing. Stay away from the ones Harbor Freight sells. They ****. And before anyone jumps me for bashing them I'm not. Just reporting that from past experience this one particular item they sell is ****. The scotchbrite pads wear out way too fast and the sanding discs are either glued on off center or poorly and fly off and sail across the room as soon as you try to use them. Stick with known brands and you'll love all the uses you'll find for them.

Not sure of the policy here on GJ, but I have been ordering through a guy that was selling them on ebay and built a relationship with. He is awesome to deal with, his product is high quality (not the HF ****) and his prices are really good... He is sending me several discs for free to try out because I was asking questions about some I have never used. He didn't even ask for any $$ for shipping. I want to write a review for him on here because he really is great to deal with and his prices are great too.... I use the 3in, when they get worn they get used on a 2in backer

I like the 3 in on a 2 in backer to get a softer edge.

Make sure you buy the "type r" discs. I bought a steal on a box one time and they were a different type. Had to buy a different backing pad that killed the savings on the cheap discs.

There used to be some really good deals on ebay on them but anymore 50c shipped a disk is the best youre going to do.

You might see the "IIT" brand discs really cheap. Pass on those as they come apart before you can get any use out of them.

Those are truly awesome. Great at paint removal, and they don't load up like a scotchbrite disc.

If you are anywhere near a large automotive "swap meet," you can buy bags of them there for very little.

I keep an angle grinder setup with the Roloc mandrel in it. Rolocs are one if those things that I buy in large quantities when budget allows because they don't go bad and I use then constantly. I use allot of 3m maroon scotch brite pads too.

What is the benefit of the scotch brite pads over sand paper pads?

You don't use the scotch brite pads for gasket removal.The scotch brite pads contain aluminum oxide which is abrasive which can get in the oil which the oil filter can't trap.
