Roloc disks separating

Having a customer issue with some roloc disks, I want to address the issue but I think the tech is the issue.

I've seen mandrels break off, I have seen them separate from the abrasive but I've never seen the abrasive separate like the one pictured where the sand paper is also letting go. I think the tech is spinning them up too fast and creating too much heat.

What says Garage Journal?

If I worked for you and you thought I was working them too hard I would fix that. Lol

These are klingspor so no not cheap discs, but not 3M either. I am questioning the technician because this is the only place I am having the issue

If they get too hot, I've seen them separate. But never had 3m do it.

I've never seen the backing split on a 3M but I have seen the mandrels let go. Something makes me think they are smacking wheel studs or something and its catching and tearing...or like I said it's gettting hot and letting loose

Yep. I've have the mandrel break off in the holder. It is a bear to remove sometimes.

Klingspor is typically good stuff. The problem is that they don't have the adhesives technology of 3M. They buy their glue from Avery and sometimes that's a problem. I had a problem with Klingspor PSA sandpaper discs in that they would not come off of the pad after use on a random orbit sander. I saw and talked to Christoph Klingspor at the IWF show in Atlanta and told him about this and he told me that in a hot and dry climate like Phoenix people weren't able to get the discs off the pads and that in Singapore, where it's hot and humid they don't stick to the pads and fly off. He also told me that 3M would not sell him glue (no surprise there). This is why Klingspor launched it's Kling-On program where they sell Velcro paper for the same price as PSA paper. Klingspor is the best sanding value most of the time, it's just that without a billion dollar R&D budget, like 3M has, they sometimes need to depend upon outside vendors for critical components like glue which isn't always up to the task.

Here is today's damage:

The top six are still together and I am missing some mandrels. I pulled the product before they burned them all up, I'm down 35 from a box of 100. The shop made out like a bandit on this one, I refunded them

The only time I have seen this happen is when this type of disc is used on a 1HP Snap-on 1/4" grinder. The torque if the grinder is tremendous compared to 1/3 and 1/2 HP grinders. Is this the case here? The 3M Green disc would break their bond but not 3M purple. Norton Blaze have held up weel but several generic private label brands have not. My experience with Klingspor has been mostly positive with with Scotchbrite type of materials but not so much with grinding disc or sandpaper

Is this one tech doing all this or is it the whole shop? (multiple techs)

This is a shop with 6 techs but this was happening to one individual primarily (but two in total). He said he was grinding down welds after mig welding a new floor pan into a rustang. This is NOT the tool/abrasive I'd use to do the job personally but because I am just the con man sales dude what do I know.:lol_hitti

Like I said, I lost out on this one. It is quite apparent that he is not using a 2" mandrel with a 2" abrasive, and it is flexing the abrasive. Regardless, it is no excuse for the mandrel to let go.

I'd tell the guy he is wrong but the mechanic is never wrong. FYI there were some shredded 3M green corps on the ground too :dunno:

I also know the shop pressure is above 90psi, it's very likely they are overclocking the abrasive too

If it's mainly just one guy maybe his technique *****. Personally I wouldn't grind welds with those. That's what grinding wheels are for. Then again maybe he's been using 3M's for this same work and this new brand isn't letting him get away with it. I'm going with a combination of not quite the right tool for the job combined with weak product. Then again I'm just the con-man mo'kanik

He definitely is using a pad that is wore down past its designed diameter. You can tell from the missing abrasive.

It's the wrong tool for the job. The backer on those is too soft and it doesn't look like the "tech" is holding them flat to the work surface either. Likely trying to blend a bubble gum mig weld. We knock down welds all day with the thickest Orange Blaze rolocs with a Snap On PT410 without issue.

We use some Klingspor stuff, but their rolocs don't even come close to the orange blaze.

They bought replacements from a competitor today, and guess what they bought? THE EXACT SAME DISKS in aluminum oxide. The tech had the nerve to tell me different
