Can anyone give me a rough cross between grit value to roloc/scotchbright pad color? Experience/trial and error will be greatly appreciated.

I'm about to start polishing the stainless steel exhaust headers for my ATV build and have been trying to get a grip on the color to grit relationship for a while now. Enco's site is the best I've come across so far. At least they include the type of abrasive. 3M's own site for the roloc/scotchbright media combination I found difficult to wade through and nothing regarding a grit comparison.

Brown - Course [grit?] Enco & Roark
Maroon - Med [grit?] Enco & Roark
Blue - Fine [grit?] Roark
Green - "Very" Fine [480?] Enco
Grey - "Super" fine [grit?] Enco

From a little trial and error of my own on an aluminum part, I think the green is something like a 480 grit? Prior to this, I didn't even know there was a "grey".

Since I'll be sanding all the way down to 1500 grit before I begin with the polishing wheels, it'll be really helpful and time saving to know, even roughly (no pun :) what the relative grit comparison might be.

Thanks

While trying to answer some of this myself, here's what 3M's web site says:

Course; Brown
Medium; Maroon
Fine; Blue? Nothing - apparently doesn't exist
Very Fine; Green
Super Fine; Grey

It's a whole lot of nothing and you should note: these are all 2 in. "Hook and Loop" not roloc. Trying to cut and paste their own description "Surface Conditioning Discs" into their search box returns ZERO results. :eyecrazy: Very frustrating
