Roloc on a cordless?

Getting ready to go down the Roloc path...

Anyone have good success using Roloc discs with cordless tools? Obviously they're generally used with a high speed die grinder, but what is the best option using with a cordless? Seems a drill wouldn't have enough speed.

I have been using the Milwaukee sander/polisher for weld prep on mild steel. I am using 3” roloc discs. It does a decent job. Slower than my Dotco but being able to take the grinding dust outside the shop is huge for me. I usually have a 6.0 battery in and I have to stop for fresh discs long before the battery is even down one light. You can stop the motor by pushing into the work too hard. Honestly, it works better than I expected. For the last few projects, all of my grinding and weld prep have been done with the M18 grinder and the M12 sander/polisher. All in the back yard where the grinding dust won’t screw up my machine tools.

Good to know, thanks.

Are you using the Milwaukee backing pads to attach to the Roloc? Will the Milwaukee take other backing pads?

I use the M12 sander/polisher too, works a treat, (I have always wanted to say that!). I use both 3" and 2" roloc discs, three work pretty well. As for the die grinders, I would not use them with a 3" roloc, maybe a 2", but even that will probably be a waste of effort.

Great to know, tahnks.

I'm still trying to figure out what kind of "chuck" it uses

Unfortunate it is not. The threads on the backing pad and adaptor are metric. I think I just recut the threads on a 3” pad to the metric size.

Some additional details near the end of this thread:

I don't remember having to recut any threads on mine? But I will say I also remembered a chuck, but I am clearly delusional. I have the roloc setup on mine right now and I did not do anything but attach it with standard parts. :headscrat

OK, so I remember what I did, I bought the kit, it came with the 2" sanding adapter, that adapter fits roloc discs and yes the 3" work fairly well. So you can do it with minimal effort if you need the 3" backer, seems like it would be fairly easy to adapt it. Sorry for the confusing misinformation.

The M12 sander/polisher uses an M9 x .75 internal thread. The die is readily available, but you can't find a bolt that size anywhere... I bought the die and made an adapter out of a 7/16" Bolt.

I hope to be able to knock out some more adapters this spring- I already moved my little lathe and the 12L14 hex stock down to AZ.

Please hurry up and buy one then so I can wait just a bit longer and get a Fuel version.

All kidding aside, I think if they were releasing one it would have shown up at Stafda and I don't believe it did.

Milwaukee, Makita and DeWalt all make cordless die grinders
Now if somebody would just make a cordless or even corded rt angle die grinder. The Proxxon is gutless and just for their tools, a dremel with a rt angle has no power. I think IR used to make a cordless but it is gone.
