I know Romex has shot up in price, and for some reason this situation had me laughing for a minute this morning.

I typically buy 250' rolls, knowing I'll use it somewhere. Well yesterday I used up the last of my 14/2 running some new porch lights, and came up about 12' short. Looked at prices this morning and started wondering who I could get to sell me a short piece. Then I remembered I had a roll of 14/3 that was barely touched, and figured close enough, so finished up before the attic got sweltering.

Sitting here with a water and I look over at the roll I tossed down:

8/12/17 date code. Looked up my receipt, bought it on 9/11/17 for $70.74

A roll is $130 today...83% increase, wish my stocks were that good!

Same receipt had a 250' of 14/2 for $40.

I always use Berkshire stock as a bellwether for solid, safe stock price growth. Berkshire B was 180 in 2017 and is about 420 today. (115% without opening the calculator??)

Your return on that Romex if it were an investment would have been about 7% per year by the way (using rule of sevens in my head). Not that great, really.

I bought 100' 12/2 romex at Lowes about a year ago, is was about 90 bucks! Oh, and all the wire is now in a caged and locked shelving unit, not out in the store shelves as before.

I bought a roll of 12/3 (that I never even needed) back in 2014ish and still have almost all of it. I should look up that cost... I try to find ways to use it, but it always feels like a waste other than a 20a MWBC

I'm pretty sure I bought the 14/3 for a 4 way switch, Soni didn't use much.

It does feel like a waste to use it, but that rolls been untouched for a while, and it was better to pull 12' off and have an extra wire in a box then to go buy another spool.
