Romex passing throught Drywall?

Hear me out. I have Highbay LED lights from Bees Lighting and I opted for the surface mount brackets. These need to be hard wired. I am having a difficult time trying to figure out the best option for a junction box for the wiring. I can attach the j-box to the light fixture or I can run flexible conduit to a j-box BUT since I am surface mounting the light, there is no way I see to get the wiring into the the j-box unless I go through the cover of the j-box. I can attach the box to the light with rigid conduit but I still need to get the romex into the box on the top side which would mean I'd have to run the wire through the drywall and into the box. Is it as simple as drilling a hole through the drywall and entering the box on the topside or am I missing something here? I feel like I'm over-complicating this.

As long as you use a proper NM wire clamp on the box the NM wire can pass through a hole in the drywall.

Does it have to be a metal clamp or will the plastic clamps be ok?

I just removed two 8 foot fluorescent light fixtures and they were hardwired. They just had romex through a hole in the drywall ceiling. They were stapled to trusses right next to the drywall penetration, and the fixture itself acted as a J box.

Does it have to be a metal clamp or will the plastic clamps be ok?

Can be either plastic or metal.

I put in a pair of switches, and two standard 120V outlets near the (6) surface mount lights, then ran a plug and wire to each one thru a strain relief. It seemed better than stapling romex to the ceiling in the garage. Each switch controls 3 surface mount lights. There is also a small LED light on another switch to use for just walking thru the garage or going to do laundry etc.

yes, they are on a GFCI circuit. And they are also on the ceiling and can't be used for anything but the lights because they require a ladder to reach. All the garage was upgraded to GFCI before the change in code. When the house was built GFCI outlets didn't even exist.
