Roof/ceiling ideas.

We are designing a 16x24 outbuilding to be used as a painting and photography studio. I order to have high ceilings for shooting taller models, we're considering options to vault the ceiling. On the roof, my wife really wants to go with corrugated metal roofing and inside I'd rather not deal with drywall at 15'. Span calculators say we're OK with 2x6 rafters, 16" o/c, and I'm going to collar them up high We're thinking of just painting the rafters and underside of the roof deck.
I'm wondering if I can fit any insulation into this? We live in Raleigh NC with relatively hot summers and winters that will dip into the teens occasionally. Any suggestions?

Why not just do scissor trusses? You would get a vaulted ceilings and save a lot of work on building rafters. Plenty of room for insulation.


If you are doing painting, you may want to reconsider sheet rock on the ceiling to keep dust down.

Search on a "roof beam" (not a "roof board") type of framing.
A post at either end supports a beam that acts as the ridge.
The rafters rest on it and give the most valted room possible.

Double check on your collar tie idea, because ties higher than one-third up the roof do not effectively hold your walls together. Think of your walls as wanting to spread open with the force of the roof on top of them.

Oops, thanks for that reminder about collar ties. I probably learned and forgot that. I'm a carpenter of sorts, but I've specialized in old house restoration and cabinetry for most of my years and haven't framed much. I'm doing nine-foot walls. I guess I can still get around 11 feet with collars ties. Does the third mark need to be the center, top, or bottom of the collar tie?
The truss idea is interesting, too. I'm building this alone with Mrs. and my ten year old boy to help, so anything to make this move smoother. I suppose I need to find a local truss builder and submit for a quote?

After some study I'm thinking of running a 2x10 ridge beam. I would be able to accomplish the 24' with a 16' and an 8' I can support the joint of those in the 8' deep loft I planned to put in the front. Once I have this drawn up, I'll post a picture

you could also use a LVL beam, 24' and not have to worry about it but, you really need to get some help putting it up, they flop and are hard to hold by yourself. It can be done, I've done it but after, wished I would have asked for help.

On the insulation, you could use ridged foam board, cut it to fit between the rafters.

Rent a drywall lift or build a platform so you won't be at 15'.
