Roof deck

I got a bunch of bison pedestals from Restore. 6 big boxes of assorted parts.

The plan it to use them for a small (10’x10’) roof deck on my 1/12 slope standing seam metal roof. A place to sit out and enjoy the view. I’ll figure out an apron to make it look nice.

The environment is brutal Texas sun. Mostly mild winters. 33 inches of rain a year. Probably decked with trex or similar. Maybe ipe squares if I want to spend the money.

I‘m trying to decide whether to use pressure treated wood or something like galvanized square tubing for the framing. Wood will be easier. But I’ve had some pressure treated wood decks (CCA) for 20 years and they eventually rotted.

If I use wood, I’d like to extend the service life. What do you guys think? Paint, stain, Copper Naphthenate, other?

Or just go ahead and use square galvanized metal tube? I can put these things on 2’ centers so span isn’t going to be an issue.

What do you guys think. Is pressure treated the way to go? I really don’t want to do this twice. I’ve got maybe 20 years to go.

Looks like if you go with Ipe tiles, you don't need an underling frame work, that might just be the way to go and then it should last a long time.

Yeah. That might justify the additional expense.

Though I’ve got no experience with ipe. Only heard good reports.

I just have a hard time believing it will be ok in such a hot sunny environment.

I only have limited experience with Ipe. I think it will weather to a gray color but not warp or split in direct sunlight. I'll bet it's cooler than Trex or similar too.

What about composite materials? There is some very durable materials out these days…

Yes. Many options. I bet trex is hot. Though me going up there when it’s 100 eff is unlikely.
