Trying to figure out some things regarding future plans on my garage and I need a fresh set of eyes.

Here is my garage as it sits now:

Hip roof, done with rafters and rafter ties just above the top of the cinderblock wall. Doesn't leak but shingles are looking pretty sad.

22x18ish cinderblock building with one window, one door, and one garage door.

Eaves are open, except for 1/4" metal mesh to keep the big critters out.

I'd like to add a full width carport to the front eventually. Possibly one to the side for the truck as well. Not sure that would work with the hip roof though. Open to an entire new roof structure if it can be done economically and look good. Alternate roofing materials as well.

It also gets extremely hot in the afternoon during summer, so I'd like to insulate the roof and door.

EDIT: forgot to mention, house is a single story 1550 sq ft on a quarter acre lot. There is defintely such a thing as too big a garage.

Thoughts?

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
Insulation is GOOD! Anything helps, but more anything helps more! (I had a bunch of R-19 batts from another project left over - doubled them up on the roof of my office in my shop and I can actually be out there year round wihtout freezing or baking!)

THe carport idea - a lot of folk do that here next to their garages or shops or barns, depends if you want to eventually incorporate that "carport" into a full garage addition or just leave it carporty. As long as you have a good overhang from your garage roof over the carport roof you should be OK. Everything here is corrugated steel (to shed snow and not burn in fire season) - mine was done with old recycled metal back in the mid-70's, and I've had no problems with mine...

That roof looks just like mine did. And that is totally worthless when it comes to storage.

If it was me....roof would be gone.

Seeing how you want to add a carport....make the roof of the carport the same as the new roof of the garage....except the carport would be open.

In the garage...because you would plan ahead...you would have used 2x8's as ceiling rafters so you could have storage up above. Then you drywall the ceiling and walls. That alone will do wonders for temp control.

I have no insulation in my garage walls and my garage stays quite comfortable.

The carport/roof will keep the sun off your garage door....so it doesn't need to be insulated.

I don't need a ton of storage in the rafters but it would be nice to have. I've done a lot of renovation work but never framed a roof. I guess trusses are an option, but I am more comfortable with rafter construction.

A shed style roof that runs from front of garage to back could be good, but I suspect a traditional style gable roof would look best and allow a car port to be built off the front.
