Roof Pitch

I am planning on building a detached garage/workshop at my place and the home has a 4/12 roof pitch and is located about 30' away from the planned garage location. The question is should the roof pitch on both the garage and house match?

Do you want attic space?I used 8/12 pitch & have 6' tall 10' wide space for 24' garage.

Generally, most match the pitch. It's not hard for the garage to "overpower" or dominate over the house, and even more with the added roof height and presance with much more of it to look at, Possibly hurting curb appeal and values.

I have a detached garage. My house is a 10-12 and my garage is a 6-12. In my case it was just not practical to have a 10-12 pitch on the garage. Go with whatever suits YOUR tastes.

My house is a 5/12 and the garage is 2/12. However, the garage is 100 ft in back of the house, so it actually looks good. Generally, I'd say match if they are close.

8 / 12 matching with hip roof in rear on detached... set back 100 feet from front curb so the 12 foot ceiling height and 10' x 16' opening doesn't look too bad...

Being a detached garage I don't think it makes a difference whether the roof pitch matches the house or not. If you need the attic space put a 8/12 or more pitch roof on it. If you don't need the storage space then match the roof pitch of the house.

When I built my garage I was limited by the building code that the distance from the ground to the peak could not exceed 16' which prevented me from matching the pitch of my house. Make sure you don't have a similar restriction.

I agree with all advise already posted. But, as someone who has 12/12 on the house and the garage I'll tell you its tough to climb those steep pitches, perhaps you will want to consider that as well

A lot will depend on if you can see any pitch difference from the street.
(Assuming it is curb appeal you are worried about.)
If you can see a gable end from the street on both the house and the garage then I vote for matching.
But if all you see from the street is gutters than the angle of the roof above them isn’t very noticeable.

If the roof lines are perpendicular then it is not so much of an issue. Parallel and you may want to consider what you see from the street. I had a house with a 6/12 pitch and built a garage that I had to go with 3/12 so I could get 11' walls. The garage and house were 30' apart (garage behind) and I felt the backyard would feel like a canyon with the gables on each side so I turned the garage roofline to parallel the street. The gables on the house faced the street.

Depending on where you live take snow accumulation into consideration. If you get a lot of snow 6/12 min IMO

The house sits perpendicular to the road and its 4/12 pitch goes front/back, the garage will sit off to left of the house at a 45 deg angle appx. and its roof pitch will be left/right as you face it.

Our house is 6/12 and I made the shop 5/12 to economize on material. Can't really tell the difference from the road.
