Roof vent question

Hi folks.
Quick question. Bought a 32 X 32 pole barn. The roof ridge vent leaks only when we have high winds while raining.
As I look... it seems the stoppers are falling out.
See pics.
It looks like a pain to stuff back in only to have it fall out again.
Would it be better to unscrew the ridge cap and lay down that cobra ridged stuff and put the cap back on?

Another quickie but I will research later...
What’s best heat source. Cheapest. I’ll only be using it to restore cars. And I have four flood lights in each corner. What would be the best lighting situation.

Thanks guys.

Pics are OK for me. We redid our roof this spring with the GAF Lifetime System. It uses Cobra roll out style ridge vent, but I don't remember which of the two it was. It's been bone dry and we've had some pretty good storms with high winds. IDK if you can use it under your existing vent, I think GAF uses specific cap shingles.

I used this Versa Vent product on one of my buildings:

http://atlasfasteners.com/VersaVent.html

I liked it very well and used it when I built a new shop. Easy to install and I've haven't has any issues over the years. It seems like those thin closure strips always get pushed in or pulled out eventually.

The stoppers that are falling out appear to be the solid foam type? Also looks like they were attached with caulking or some other type of adhesive?

Usually the closure strips are vented when used in that scenario or else your ridge vent can’t vent properly.

We rolled out the cobra style exhaust vent mesh then laid my ridge cap over it. No closure strips required.

I could be wrong here, but those foam strips look like the enclosures that are placed under the metal on the eaves. The material I used on my ridge cap was much wider and more porous. It is also screwed in between the cap and roof steel.

You don't have a ridge vent. You have a ridge cap.

You can unscrew the cap and place new strips or use a butyl rubber caulk like solar seal 900 or osi quad the re-adhear the strips. Clean the tin first with mineral spits or acetone to remove dust and contaminates. Just a dot or so every inch. Place the cap back on and screw back down. Either replace the screws or replace the washers on the screws so you don't have leaks.

You don't have a location but if your in the Midwest menards has everything you need

You don't really want a ridge vent if you plan to heat the building. Ridge vents are to allow heat and moisture to escape from an attic while the ceiling below is insulated to retain heat in the occupied area.

Thanks for the help guys. Yes. They are the foam ribbed type that just had a peel n stick backing. I was thinking unscrew the ridge cap and lay down that mesh like my house has but now I’m wondering if wind driven rain would penetrate the mesh. I guess I’ll have to get up there and see if these strips were the wrong ones IE: meant for the eaves or if there should be something else used. It was built 10 years ago by local yahoos so maybe they scrimped.
Thanks again. I’ll look at all the links and ideas you gave n see if one would work. I’m not keen on just re glueing these foam strips down as it seems they don’t hold but 6 years or so. I asked the owner and he said they leaked years ago.

Forgot to add that I am in Northern Michigan and that I will be closing off the ceiling and blowing insulation on top of that.

Do you have gable vents? They are common around here on pole barns. If they put roof vents in they are typically a copula. I personally have not seen ridge vents on a metal roof. This is not to say they don't make them.

As to speculate why is subjective but here goes. I know for a fact that the roll style vents that goes under shingles are both ineffective in keeping wind driven moisture out and allowing ventilation out. They are to thin and have no structure to keep from collapsing.

The better ridge vents (both metal and plastic) have a lip at the bottom edge that uses aerodynamics to force wind driven water over the vent. This lip and increased structure makes a huge difference. As to slipping ridge vent material under your ridge cap I doubt it will be satisfactory stopping wind driven water or staying in place.

Go with the mesh style for the vent.
I have been in pole barns using it during FLA thunder storms and no leakage.
It does have to be installed correctly to keep it in place.
