Roofing material question

OK, my roof on the house and garage is an asphalt roof, now 12 years old, and its falling apart. Supposed to be 25 yr shingles but I am now finding out they never make it that long. What a scam. Anyhow I'm thinking of steel or aluminum roofs vs new asphalt shingles.
Anyone out there in the business and would like to share the pros and cons of each one. I got a quote for asphalt, 50yr shingles, Landmark series from CertainTeed it was $10k, the steel roof guy quoted me $24K, I haven't got a quote yet for the aluminum shingles.
Would like to hear some experiences with either.
Oh I live in Ontario, so got to consider cold and bad weather.

Lots of both around here, with metal running 2~3x the cost of fiberglass. Fiberglass will last the rated life if they are a good brand, installed correctly and the attic space is properly vented. Unvented hot attics will take about 8~10 years out of fiberglass shingles over a 12~15 year period. I put cheap-cheap Payless Cashways fiberglass shingles on an old 16x22 garage in 1997 and they are still good to go after several hail storms. No leaks, no cracking.

In this area, fiberglass/asphalt roofs typically do not last their rated life because of hail storms. The prevailing wisdom is that you pay for the first roof and if keep your insurance current you won't have to pay for another roof on that house. Our old house had a roof done in 1999 and again in 2006. We just missed getting a new roof on the current house in 2011 by about 10 miles. So, we're due here.
