I know this may be a dumb question but the only dumb question is the one not asked.

On the botton side of roofing shingles there is a strip of plastic. I always thought that you had to peel this off before nailing the shingle to the roof. Why does it say Do Not Remove on the strip?

If you notice on the shingle that your laying over there are tar spots. The plastic strip lines up with those tar spots. Helps with sealing the new shingles down. At least thats my take on things.

When you open a bundle of shingle, notice how the shingles are packaged. The plastic strip lines up with the tar dots on the shingles above it. These tar dots are what seal the tab of the single to the shingle below it.

The plastic strip is so the tar dots do not stick the shingles together while in the package. When you installl the shingle, the plastic strip is covered up by the shingle above, it does nothing (good or bad)

So removing the clear plastic strip is a hugh waste of time. Also the plastic strip litters the job site. I guess too many people were still removing the plastic strips, so the manufacturers had to label the strip "do not remove"

Also, if you remove the plastic strip, the shingles stick together making it fun in trying to nail a jack brackets to the roof, under the shingles. Sometimes you might need to separate the shingles apart once installed. This is one of those times.

glad I asked thanks alot guys. I was upset last night because the contractor finished roofing the new garage and i didn't see any of those strips laying around. i went as far as clinbing on the roof to look if they were there or not and they were still on the shingles. I was going to give him a piece of my mind but i figured i would do a little research first.

I have never done any roofing and just assumed that strip was to be taken off.
