I have been working on it for a while. Bought the 12.5 acres in nov of 2003, when I sold my race truck. The building was purchased at the end of 2004, delivered march 1st 2005. I bought the biggest building I could afford, not afford to erect. I had some issues getting a concrete price that was reasonable, but that is now over. Should pour Friday, or Monday.

The shop is 60x100x16 with a 20x100 shed roof. I bought it from Ameristeel in Sanger TX. I have in slab plumbing for future use. 3 14x12 doors, 2 10x10 doors. The inspector could not understand why I was building such a big building, I explained it would be bigger if I could afford it.

I have worked out of a 30x50 shop for the last 9years. I will be happy with the new space for a while.

The pics are from last year, and a few days ago. I will post more pics when the slab is done. Should start erecting the building a few days after the pour.

Just got back from the site. The pad is finished. I am real happy so far. Control joints cut on 10' centers. Lots of lines but it should not crack. It looks like we will start erecting on wed.

Good luck with the no cracks thing! How thick is the slab? I don't see any bolts set ( pictures too small)?? I would hold off for at least 7 days before I put any thing on that slab let alone heavy machines and the steel. It sure looks like an easy deal you guys get with only having to use the thickend slab instead of a foundation for your buildings. It must save $20,000 in the cost of your construction!

Looks good, keep the pictures of the progress coming

The slab is 5", the footing is between 24"-30" sq. The form boards are est on a 2-4"slab. The compaction report was 2.5-4.4 ton/ft checked every 5ft. I am not sure what kind of cracks I will have. My 30x50 has no control joints, and no cracks, but I doubt I will be that lucky.

W-cummings, as you know there is nothing cheap about building a shop this size. For the same money I could build a very nice 2000sqft house in this area. Problem with a house is it does not fit welders, lifts, mills, and tools very well. I knew if I built my house first, I would end up with a smaller house. Too much house and not enough shop would ****.

I just have to build a house that falls in line with the shop. Chances are if I ever sell the property the new buyer would just use the shop to store Christmas ornaments and a blue bird Wonder Lodge. I will build the barn next and it will not be as big. 18x18 stalls are larger than normal, but so are Shires.

Looks good man. Is that concrete dry yet? I have to drive down and carve my initial :willy_nil
Glad I didn't have to help with those forms...that looks like it was a LOT of work

Now you have plenty of room to do something with that 348 I sold ya. The contractor finaly got started on our house and the roof will be on this week. Been looking to see what I want to build for a shop but only have enough $ for a 30x60
We are still going to come over and get some furniture from you.

The 348 is now .30 over, all machine work done, all parts bought waiting to be built.

The shop is going up. My concrete guy got 16 out of 60 anchor bolts in the right place. We had to saw cut the sheeting ledge across the back 100ft wall. This is my first major construction project, I am learning as I go. Framing should be done in 2 more days.

Well it is going up quick. Very little drama so far. I had to go buy screws, $1200 worth. I will try to get a credit from the building company. Ordered my doors yesterday, they should be here in 2weeks. The insulation contractor will be spraying the k13 insulation starting next tuesday. The well driller will be on site Wed/thurs of next week.

I have not worked on any hotrods or rockcrawlers for awhile. I will have to be finishing up some projects that I have parts on hand for, I have no money to spend on projects after the new shop.

The pictures are after one day of sheeting. It should be done sunday as long as the weater is good.

I am going to the site today to reframe the walk doors. I planed on installing 36" pre hung doors. I made notes for my guys to frame the openings at 38", well they are at 36". Wish I would have caught it before the sheeting was up. I should have some good pics tonight. The walls should be done today.

The 3 guys that are erecting the shop for me are awsome. I could not ask for a quicker, or better crew. The screws are all inline, side to side, and top to bottom. They are doing a very nice job.

I have not taken any good pictures in the last few days. The building is done. I have to fedex samples of my wall sheets to International Cellulose so they can run some tests. The common primer they use will not stick to my sheeting. I would be starting wiring this weekend but until the insulation is done I am not able to run conduit.

The well drilling crew has been MIA. The drill rig is on site, 300ft deep. They lost the water feed that cools the bit, so until they fix it no more drilling. I hope to hit water soon. At $11 a foot, the sooner the better.

I ended up not getting any good news about the k13 insulation. I went with r19 fiberglass in the walls, and r25 in the roof. I have wmp50 vapor barrier/facing. It is a bright white facing with an aluminum foil radiant heat barrier on the fiberglass side.

The lower 83.5" of the shop walls have a white liner panel. I have 3.5 sqfeet of fat mat on the back side of every panel. I used 3.5" wide sill seal(the blue stuff) behind the liner panel. It serves as a filler to bring the panels out enough to be even with the banding strap screws, and it helps absorb panel vibration. I have enough liner panel left to cover the bottom of the sheetrock wall that will section off the office/apt.

I had to rent a second lift. It would have been to slow to just use my lift. I should be done with the insulation in a week or 2. Then we can start wall framing/electric.

What is the issue with the K13? I haven't used it, but the rep is sending me information at the office on a regular basis - just curious what you found out about using it.

It is a great product. I had wanted to use k13, and then do the retro fit fiberglass like I am using. I had the k13 contractor come by the site before we started erecting the building, and he said it would be fine. When we were finishing trimming the gutters he had yellow freight drop off something like 20 pallets of the k13 product. The contractor was painting a few test panels with the primer he uses. The primer would not stick to the coating on the backside of my liner panels. International cellouse in Houston tx could not find any primer that would stick. They said I could sandblast the coating off, and then it would work great:wtf:

The office/apt bay will have a 2x6 wall with 5/8 firerock. I will be insulating all interior sheetrock walls. The second story floor will be insulated, so will all of the wood framed ceiling. I am going for a very efficent living space. It should be a very comfortable yearround. I do not plan on living in the apartment for very long. I am not sure if I will have to sell my house that I am in now. I would like to keep my house in NC, lease it out, and build my new house out of pocket. Right now I have some lint in my pocket, not much to build a house with.

I talked with the inspector. He said they would not do a framing inspection until my electric and plumbing had been inspected. I explained what I was doing, the fact that there would be nothing of the metal building to see after it was insulated, and the liner panel was up. The inspector said he just needed to see a few sets of anchor bolts, and the rest would be fine. They are more worried with my lumber framed walls.

I have learned that most builders cut every corner. The bottom line is $$$ not quality. I have never done anything like this, but I have looked at it like building a car/truck. Double check the fit, measure until you are sure, assemble it strait and square. If you use the best material available, it seams that it goes faster, and looks better when it is done.

I have enjoyed building this shop. I would not do one this big as a first building project. When I build the 40x60 barn it will be much easier. It has been very easy to get lost in the scale of this project. Things take 100's of hours instead of a day or two.
