Rotary bits for plastics

Doing automotive work, I occasionally need to remove material from plastic interior peices (grinding into the plastic for clearance or cleaning up cuts). Air saw works to cut large sections out but for small areas, it is tempting to grab a rotary burr bit on a die grinder but that ends up looking sloppy and melts the plastic. What is the correct bit or tool for this purpose?

What sort of rotary burr are you melting plastic with? A sharp carbide burr should be making dust.

If you want something more aggressive, find carbide carving burrs made for wood. I have several from Kutzall.

I had pretty good luck with a tool like this for plastic using a rotary tool:

I had to play around with the speed to keep it cool enough to not melt the plastic.
I have also used small sanding drums.

Most recently I used this dremel bit on a pencil grinder
https://www.dremel.com/en_US/produc...ies/dremel-194hp-high-performance-carving-bit

I also just found that dremel has a recommended speed chart according to bit style and material it is used on, and if I am looking at it right they state around 35k rpm speed for plastic. I'm not sure what my speed was, I just remember trying to set my speed lower not higher.

I have been meaning to try out sanding drums aswell actually.
