in my opinion if you are going to or want good air flow that stays consistant then a srew is the only way to go they cost more but they can sure put out the air i have 3 screws 1 portable for my blast rig 1 to run my shop and i just came across one more that i could not turn down for the price i am going to install it as a back up unit and get rid of my 2 t-30 ingersalls that currently run the shop while i am servcing the screw

Demand would be pretty low. Just for my garage at home. I was thinking of installing it into an enclosure outside and then pipe the air into the garage. Just for those times where I'm working on something then think, "man, it would be nice to have some air right now..."

We have the I-R rotary screw compressors at work. They make an incredible amount of noise, far worse than even a small oilless compressor.

The BendPak rotary screw that you provided the link to, is a 15HP unit with around 60CFM at 150PSI...

That is probably more CFM than you would need in a home garage.

I haven't seen many rotary screw machines that were much smaller than 15HP.

With a rotary you are paying for the higher duty cycle capability (longer life) and generally lower maintenance costs vs. a reciprocating compressor of similar size.

as to them being quieter, yes, HP for HP they are quieter than reciprocating compressors of similar size...

:headscrat Uhh...well, if I was rolling in dough and could afford absolutely anything I might consider a rotary screw compressor. But for normal home-garage type applications, you're probably better off with one of their Trimaxes instead.

I don't even know if there is such a thing as a consumer-level rotary screw air compressor.

I know it's probably a bit overkill, but according to their ad it says that people could have a normal conversation while it's running. That's nice being that I'm in a suburban environment.

I don't know if I would necessarily classify them as "quiet" as much as I would say the noise is different than a piston compressor.
We have a 75hp and a 30hp in our plant (75hp doesn't kick on until needed). There's no way a "normal conversation" is occurring during operation of either one.

Not with the models we have. They are so loud that there is no way to talk to anyone in the same room with the compressors. I'd bet that they are right near the upper levels that OSHA requires hearing protection.

At work we have a 22HP Kaeser SFC frequency drive for our primary compressor and 25HP direct drive unit for a backup. You can stand next to the both, but particularly the AC Frequency drive unit and hold a conversation without raising your voice. Nice unit.

we have 2 of the 50hp atlas copco compressors here at work

if you have the need for lots of air, then get it
if you need lots of air all day but your demand varies greatly over the day then you may want to look at the version with the variable speed drive. the VSD will save money in energy

If your central concern is noise, why not just get a reciprocating compressor with a large two stage pump running at a low (700-800) pump RPM?

I recently built a 120-gallon compressor configured this way for my garage/shop because I wanted something quiet that put out enough air to run a media blast cabinet. I have about $300 total into it. The video below makes it sound louder than it is, you can definitely have a normal conversation when standing right next to it.

A rotary screw compressor for a home shop?? 60 CFM? Do you have 208 three phase power at your house? I have run sites where we had the Atlas Copco fixed speed and VSD units for a three shift 200,000 sq ft manufacturing facility. Nothing quiet about these machines. They also throw an incredible amount of heat. In fact in the winter time I would duct just the VSD into the building and heat a 3000 sq ft loading dock! At 60 cfm, you could open a valve, blow half your air out the window and still have twice the air you would need for a good sized blast cabinet. IMHO, I would opt for a nice 2 stage low RPM piston machine that would cost you less than the install for the screw compressor.

Typically a Srew Compressor is for higher demand shops. Most of the compressor mfg. make units with sound enclosures ( 68 dba). I just installed a Quincy QT Extreme 7.5 hp recip compressor for Auto Repair shop, nice compressor with enclosure again in the sound level was in the 68 dba range.
Price was around $3,700.00 range. Bel-aire has one around $2,800.00.

LOL... definite overkill for my use...

I'll probably go in this direction.
