Rotating vise stand concept

I made a rotating stand awhile back and was not content with the amount of torque it took to lock it down.
There was a thread the other day about what size set screw to use for a receiver vise mount that got me thinking about this concept.
I diddledicked with it all day long and came up with this.

2-1/2" and 3" SCH 80 pipe
8 positive horizontal positions
16 positive vertical positions
I'l put a vise mounting plate on each end, opposed to each other.
It locks up with very minimal torque on the screw and seems to move easily and smoothly.

Metal work looks clean & good, spent some time of that.

Cannot comment on the intended function. Never have had need a vise capable of perpendicular rotations.

Pretty cool, I like the idea. One can never have too many fixturing or workholding setups! :)

Neat idea -
it'll be interesting to see how it performs with the weight of a vice or two added

I've had the "wilmar" version of this

https://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lb-capacity-engine-stand-69886.html

Sitting on the shop mezzanine since the '80's, used it exactly ONCE back then to build a 400 SBC - I've thought about modding it for a welding positioner, but that "round tuit" just hasn't happened yet -

I like your innovations, just might prod me into bumping that project up a bit - thanks... Steve

Thanks all,
Got a couple vises mounted this afternoon.
The opposing vises counterweight each other, making it move without a lot of energy
Used some graphite to break friction, without attracting grit.
Works as intended.

Is this what you build when you have too many vises sitting around? :)

I think it's an interesting design and I get how the two vises balance each other on the pipe. But it seems like one or the other is usually not going to be usable.

You're absolutely right.

This would mean Royce would need to grab ANOTHER vise and build a stand for IT. !! [emoji1]

Got the column clamp done today.
I like posting ideas, not all of them being good or useful to others.
I feel it generates more ideas, that's a good thing.
I seem to use a lot of bar and plate for projects and I like to hold them like this pic shows, so this stand will spend most of it's time in this position.
Thanks all

That makes more sense. I still think you must have too many vises and should send some to me though.

I was tidying up today and needed to move this stand.
I looked at it and thought why would I not put 2 more vises on it.
I could not think of a reason not to.
So, now it has a Parker 974 with copper soft jaws, reed 224 coach maker with leather soft jaws, parker 239x and a reed 403-1/2 swivel jaw
This is fantastic for all the hand shaping I do with chisel, file, grinder, saw and plane.

Thanks Kevin,
I don't know about masterpiece or wizard, but I'm glad you like it.
It is my pleasure to share.

That vise stand is impressive - in addition to the quality vises that are mounted to it. I have never seen anything like it.
I don't have any background in metal work, so I have an amateur question:
How did you drill the hole in the center of the ball hitch? Do you have a custom jig for your drill press?

Thanks Steel 35,
We do get a bit of winter here too.

Supercat.
Good question, when drilling a sphere, clamp a scrap to the drill press table, then drill a hole in the scrap that is big enough to nest the ball in.
It will insure the hole is centered on the ball.
Thanks

I didn’t think you had to many vises until you bolted 2 more to it, lol. I like the indexable horizontal tube/ notches and pins. Good idea
