I've decided to unload this small Southbend "Workshop" lathe. I have a potential buyer. I'm just trying to come up with a fair market value. It's a model 115-YB. Was made in the late 30's. Has quite a bit of tooling. It's listed as a 9" swing and a 36" bed. Assuming the buyer is happy with the condition, what's a fair value? Thanks.

around here they'd ask $1500. North East .
It seems to lack the threading gearbox, but has some tooling.
Failure to clean it up and arrange the tooling so it doesn't look like a pile of junk will cost you.

That lathe, in good condition with some tooling should sell between $2500 to $4000cdn. ( in this area) South Bend, like SnapOn can get higher prices. My friend has a nice SB9. He paid $3500 for his lathe, and he is cheap.
I bought a really nice MYFORD SUPER 7 40 years ago. I paid $3250.
Does your SB9 have a qujick-change gearbox for single point cutting threads?
I bought a nice South Bend 16X120 for $1000, delivered. These larger lathes can be a PITA to sell into the domestic market. The seller tried to give it to me after his advertising it for 10 months. I insisted on paying because it was the right thing to do.

I would start at $1500 and be willing to talk.

I have a SB9, no quick change gear box, and it is a very good, user friendly lathe. And like it was said above, they are a bit like the Snap-on of lathes, everyone knows the name, and that is one you can put on a bench. No need for a rigging crew, just disassemble it and move it on a dolly. That brings the price up for the home workshop, and lets face it, that is who is going to buy it.

My buyer doesn't have the money. I listed it in the classifieds here for $1200. I probably could get more, but I really want it out of my way. I like to give members here first shot at things, then I offer it to the weirdos on Craigslist. Which is always fun. But I always find good buyers amongst the weirdos.
