OK I hear a lot of good things about Rock Island vices on here. I saw a recent posting on Craigslist and I wanted to get some opinions on this vise. The seller is asking $125 and it looks like the just dug it out of the ground!

Off-hand, it looks like it's been welded on its backside and missing a mounting foot. $20 tops

NC: while i do like Rock Island vises that one has been rode hard and instead of put away wet it was stuck in the mud. keep looking because you should find a decent vise in that price range.

PM me if your budget is a bit bigger for a nice vise and even with shipping you'll have a much nicer vise. or if some member is local maybe they have one because as you may know there are a few vise and old tool guys on this forum.

Can't see too much on this tiny phone screen but I can tell the screw has been replaced.

Exmaxima Thanks for pointing out the missing foot I completely overlooked that.

Drive Thanks for the advice and the offer. I currently have a 4-5" import vice at home that I am using, it works well so I an not in "need" of a vice. I am just always on the lookout for something that I can't/shouldn't pass up. This one hit my radar since I could not find out much on the model number on the side of the vice.... sometimes that means it is a rare piece, so I just wanted to check in here.

May be missing a foot/tab, may not, can't tell without seeing the other side. Most older vises used a 3 point mount, which was spaced like a 4 point mount, with the front tab omitted. That said, it is a rather sad looking example that is way overpriced IMO.

I don't know, when I see tools like this, it is like watching those damn Sarah McLachlan/Alyssa Milano commercials.... (Sad music playing in the background) Everyday around the US thousands of tool have been abused and neglected. For just a small investment of your time and money you can adopt one of these poor tools and give it a better life... They are out there just waiting to be brought home to a loving garage where they will be cared for and loved...

That vise will sit for another hundred years at that price. I wouldn't pay a dime over 25 bucks for it. You can see that the jaws are snotted up and the screw is not original. Who knows what lurks within.
