I have narrowed my choices in a 1/2 ratchet to an SK 42470 or a williams 36 tooth, (don't know the model number). What are your opinions on these? Both US made and they are about the same price.

I have both, main difference ( other then the obvious) is the S-K is about 50 tooth, so a finer ratchet mechanism.

Either is an extremely good ratchet. I've not had an issue with either one.

I'd say if you can, buy both.

That is the Williams i'm looking at only with a standard length handle. The only thing that seems like problem would be the handle being slippery when covered in oil or grease. Other than that... it's pretty ****.

I like the teardrop for a few reasons. Generally the head is smaller giving greater access and I like the selector switch better. I have some old SKs, newer SK palm control and Matco/Armstrong. I reach for the matcos first. I I do think this is personal preference kind of thing.

Like has been said, it's a matter of personal preference. I prefer SK over anyone else's ratchets, I'm just more comfortable with the round head and knurled handle.

If you can, get your hands on both and make your decision from there.

Not a huge fan of the round head ratchets, with exception of my SO flex 1/4. That Williams ratchet looks really nice.

Most retailers around me have signs up that SK isn't warranting anything for them anymore so everything is "as is".

I couldn't care less what shape the head is. How does the grip feel in your hand and how hard can you pull on it without pain? Craftsman RP grips are for instance, bad for this for me. I can pull on the round/shaped (metal) grip of a classic Snap-On as hard as I want to without it hurting my hand. YMMV
