FNG here liking all the ideas and pics from everyone. I'm in the starting stages of my 36DX30WX13Twalls. I have two doors getting installed one
12TX16W door on the 30' front wall, one 10TX10W on the other end 30' wall and one man door on the 36' wall facing the house. It will have a metal roof and Hardie board on the walls per city code. I have already poured the 6" slab but problems with the concrete trucks not getting dipatched, they are having to rip out the new slab and start over:FIREdevil. I will be posting pics as the build gets going and take any ideas on how to make things better along the way.

Well today is the 28 day since the concrete has been poured. Instead of doing the epoxy floors this weekend, hopefully Monday they should demo the slab to start over. I hope it will be ready to repour the slab by the end of the week. I'm so ready for the building to be upso I can start my work on it.

Here are some storage shelves that I bought off craigslist $300 total. They are all metal %100 welded (very heavy). The singles(about100lbs each) I'm going to stack two of them up for two 6' long workbenchs, the bunkbeds(about300lbs each) stacking two of them up to have two 10' tall shelves two wide. I should be able to get about 15 plastic storage boxes per 10" tall shelve.

I am having a hard time following what you are saying. You had a slab, and had to re do it ?

Yes i have a slab, but when they did the pour the concrete trucks didnt come back to back. The first truck came then the second one didnt show up for almost a hour then the third about 15min later. So the first load had already setup so much that the seam between the two couldnt blend seamless. The concrete manufacturer has already said they are at fault for not having the trucks dipatched correctly, they are paying to replace all the concrete that was poured.

Love the big beam construction! Looking forward to seeing how you get those bunkbeds worked out. Did those come off a ship? They have that battleship grey look.

Thanks guys, I'm second guessing myself :dunno:on the bunkbeds now to save on floor space. I bought them off craigslist, not sure where they got them from. I thought about building a hanging shelf like this. I could hang them from the roof 3' down and still have 10' from the ground up. I could put them over my work benchs and toolbox. I don't think they would ever effect me that way.

Hi;

I hope this isn't a dumb question but I am thinking of building a shop exactly the same size as yours.

I am wondering what the advantage is of using the steel frame and then wood framing between the steel members vs. conventional stick framing the entire structure.

Thanks
Rick

The ones on the bottom look a lot like the bunk beds in our local jail. I went on a tour there once.:D

I wanted a full metal building, city code wouldn't let me have metal on the outside walls. So we came up with this plan to put Hardie Plank on the outside walls and steel framing to keep the inside very open up to the rafters. I wanted to be able to pull my motorhome inside and do any roof work in the builing.
A steel frame in Texas makes a structure a little more tornado-resistant. ;)
:thumbup:And termiteds don't like metal, they might eat my walls off but the roof will still be there.

:lol_hitti Very well could be. They had been bolted to the floor, and they are heave as hell. Just incase, I think i will pressure wash them;)

Hello,
I am considering a similar build... would you mind saying where you ordered the steel frame and what your cost is so far? Thanks.

This is a first I have seen this type of construction using the metal with wood stud walls. I think thats a great way to get your span and strength of the roof but still have the siding option to match the house. Very nice!

Metal Mart is where all the steel came from, it was a custom order to my specs. I would think a barebones building like this you could get in around 25K maybe cheaper with less quality materials.

Thanks Nighttrain. I had to think of a way to build the outside to city code and the inside how I wanted it. I love how it is coming together.

Well the outside of the building is built. I have to wait for the garage doors. The front door need low headroom tracks and no one in the DFW area has them, was told two weeks. Ordered 2 and 11/2 kits of Epoxy-coat to do the floor in the light gray. We trenched 170' from the house to the building for power. Hope this weekend we can run the wires and get some power and lights installed this weekend.

I can't tell from the pictures, but is it going to have a garage door on each end? A pull through design?

It does have doors on both ends, but only for ventilation. It gets hot in Texas and I wanted to get as much airflow as possible. Pull thru would've been nice, but the city will not allow the doors to face the street.

Nice start! Need updates!!

Thanks, give me a couple of days and I will get some new pictures up. Things have been slow work the last few weeks. We did get all the eletrical, garage doors done this weekend. Today we had concrete poured a 177foot driveway, sidewalk and patio on the shop. Hope this weekend we can get the epoxy coat down on the floor.

Looks nice & dry; when I did my trench in Sept we had not had rain in over a week, it was still damp/wet 18 inches down.....kid of clumpy.

Nice job!

Thanks. That was a long day with that little trencher, if I ever have to do it again I will rent a bigger machine.

Congrats, its coming together very nicely!

I love how the floor came out too. I'm just curious what sort of prep was required for the Epoxy-Coat. I've been wanting to do this in my garage for quite some time

Great garage!!!! Do you plan on putting some topsoil around the sidewalk to build it up and help prevent anything coming out from underneath?

Thanks for the complement. My concrete was new, I would check with epoxy coat about your prep for your project. Worth the time and effort if you ask me.
