Quick question. I would like to buy a 1/2 hp motor for a wire wheel and the highest rpms i can find in my price range is 1725. I basically am just going to use it to remove paint off some old gas cans i have. Is that enough?

It'll work, but I like 3450 a lot better.
You could always pick up a cheap old belt driven buffing arbor and speed it up to whatever you want.

I see them all over the place at auctions and flea markets. Just make sure the bearings/bushings are tight, unless you have a way to replace them.

I use a 1750rpm motor for my wire wheels. I have a 3450rpm motor for my buffing wheels. I like the 1750rpm better for the wire wheels and have been thinking about changing out the buffer to the lower rpm, but I'm not sure it would work as well.

Most wire wheels are safety rated at 3600 rpm's or higher. I'm not sure what money you're laying out for an elec motor but you should be able to find 6" bench grinders pretty cheap. I like cl for this kind of stuff if I have the time to wait.
