I have several tubes of this RTV

Is this ok to use on things like oil pans, diff covers, etc? The product info talks about things like gear boxes but I can't see anything about it being oil proof.

It ran me about $8 a tube so a decent deal. Been going through a tube or two a month of the regular in the metal tube RTV which runs me about $7 each on my account at Schuck's

Be careful about shelf life I would only buy an amount you would use in 3 months otherwise you may find it hardened in the tube.

It's got a use by date of 2023 on the tubes. I'd imagine it'd be fine well after that though.

silicone can go bad in that it might not cure if it's too far past the best before date .

I buy the smallest tubes of various types and brands of sealers as possible. That said, I use new fresh brand name sealers (3M, etc) on critical or 'I don't want to do this again anytime soon' jobs. Btw, I've had very good luck with HF's black 'do it all' sealer. Cheap, doesn't dry out so much at the nozzle, and has held up well for me.

This was the first type of RTV ever made during the space program. Watch the movie "The Right Stuff." The German scientists that invented the rockets used in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs never wanted the capsules to have windows as they did not know how to seal them from the vacuum of space. John Glenn and Alan Sheppard said if it doesn't have windows we're not flying it. This forced the need to find a way to seal the windows to the capsule and thus Dow Corning came up with RTV 732. It is of the acetic acid cured type. It works fine the only downside is that you shouldn't use it to seal electrical connectors as the acetic acid will corrode the copper and the connector contacts. Later versions of RTV use an oxime chemistry which is of neutral ph. All of Permatex’s latest RTV’s such as Grey Ultra (which is what I use) are of this type. The first type has been used for 50 years now so it’s withstood the test of time so as long as it’s within its expiration date it should be fine.

News to me. I ordered a 1/2 cartridge (used in a caulking gun) of Ultra Grey two weeks ago and it wasn't a problem. Showed up in two days like it always does.

That's where I bought my Ultra Grey. If they will not ship Ultra Grey why then did they ship it to me?

Because it's being considered HAZMAT and can't be air shipped. I suspect you live in the L48?
There's lots of stuff Amazon won't ship.

OK, it's maybe because I live in the lower 48 or because I live 10 miles from a Huge, Gigantic, Humongous Amazon warehouse. Probably it's one of the two choices.

Certain RTV products are designed for use with oxygen sensors or chemical fluids within container types. And that folks is about all I know about this subject because most of my stuff I goof around with is old and doesn't have any of the new-fangled requirements.
