Rubberized undercoating as a 'buffer'

I have a recently completed pole barn with steel roof & siding. I ended up about $8k over-budget, so I had to pass on having it sheeted with OSB before the siding was installed and as a result I've got plenty of areas where I can see daylight and cold air can freely creep in. I know that it's not a good idea to use spray foam (Great Stuff, et al) since it traps moisture and could lead to premature rusting of the siding. I was thinking about spraying in some rubberized undercoating first to protect the siding and then following that up with spray foam to seal up the 'leaky' areas. Sound like a good idea? Building is not insulated at the moment, but I plan to add fiberglass batts as I can afford to until I've got the whole thing done.

How hard would it be to pull the steel siding? I would think your best bet would be to pull sections of the siding and add OSB as you can. Purchase enough to do a side at a time and you should be able to finish it up in no time.

Trying to patch like you mention would be a pain and still not as good as if you took the time to do it right.

It would be difficult to pull the siding...the walls are 15' high and the site is sloped, so a man lift is required to do the job. I know that it would be better overall to have the OSB, but that just isn't going to happen. Sealing it up with foam is simple enough provided I can protect the interior of the siding. I would basically just be spraying along the top, bottom & corners and around the service door.

Geez... I've used foam to seal quite a few area in my pole building since I moved it to my lot in '94... no rust issues here.

You can buy DIY closed cell foam "kits" on-line that will fill large areas... a little pricey but cheaper than a professional install...

Thanks krooser, that's good to know about your experience with the foam after 15 years. I've seen the DIY kits and would go that route instead of the fiberglass batts if I had the cash. One of the owners of the company that I work for actually also owns a spray foam company, so I could get it done cheaper than normal. Main concern right now is just sealing up the small voids.
