Thanks for all the kind words guys!

Yeah i'm over the moon with it! cant wait to see it in person on Friday.

All the hanging panels should be done today too i think.

Beautiful color, is that Japanese Racing Green? :)

Funny enough no its Emerald Green Metallic, i believe only available in the American market in the 280z's. I only know of 1 other one painted this colour in Australia. Everyone paints them orange or Safari Gold or red LOL.

Update October 2019

So the Zed didn't get painted this week. painter fell behind with work and other jobs bla bla bla.

It gets done on Monday i hope.

Anyway, had a big weekend moving last week. Had a mate help me with her ute and trailer. We moved my toolbox, workbench, air compressor and BBQ over from my family home and brought it all to my house. What a mission. 3 trips and about 6 hours worth of work total!

I also finished the frame to the bomb proof loo:

https://flic.kr/p/2hu4EgX

.

A close up of the finished door handle:

https://flic.kr/p/2hu4EfQ

Some retro wall art for the loo, more to come:

https://flic.kr/p/2hu4Ef4

.

Toolbox in place, what a mission moving it in the garage without scratching the epoxy flooring! It pretty much slotted in between the wall pillars perfectly! how about that!

https://flic.kr/p/2hu7oVd

But here we see a problem. I didn't make a side panel for this side as it butted up against the wall in the old garage, so i will need to make a new one:

https://flic.kr/p/2hu4EdA

Rudi.

that is the coolest door handle I have yet to see hahaha

Friday update!

Went down to see her on Friday! here she is pushed out of the booth:

https://flic.kr/p/2hxpo7p

.

And here she is seeing sunlight for the first time in nearly 2 years:

https://flic.kr/p/2hxpnRu

Once i get the damage bill, i will try and sort out suspension.

I am in dire need for new shocks.

I have found them out of Summit racing, and a Z car shop in California, but they said postage to Australia was going to be $189 US ( $275 AUS) to post the shocks out with UPS economy International.
Thats more than the price of the shocks!!!! :shocking:

Gotta try and find some other solution :headscrat:mad:

Looks good! Doors, hatch and hood done too?

Yes they were done this week, but i don't have a photo yet, I'm gonna head down on Monday.

Paint job has come up a treat.

I’m assuming you’re trying to match a theme with the toilet frame because I can’t see why else you would do it like that when you could have it framed and gyprocked in an afternoon. Looks cool but looks like a lot of extra work to me :dunno:

yeah its to match my workbench/toolbox with the wood inlaying.

Rudi, I thought the steel framing was a great way to add centimeters of precious space to your shed. I recall having to trim a centimeter off a countertop to fit a tool cabinet in the perfect spot. I also thought it fit the theme you've gone with.

You do realize the Z is an accident waiting to happen. Not for you but for the distracted drivers who see it go by and take their eyes off the road for way too long. Even without all the bling it's a stunner.

Hi, Rudi. It must be the time to finish a new garage space and set it up to finish a car project, with you, Sean-buick and JDMjunkies all getting moved into new garage workshops! Z is absolutely beautiful. Watching it go back together will be a treat for sure. Pretty neat design features for the garage bathroom, too.

Update, End of October

The wife an i have been scrambling to get so much done the last 2 weeks in preparation for our housewarming party, which was last night. (I am extremely hung over as i write this, HA!)

She wanted some wedding photo's Blown up to A1 size for the house and make a few into a canvas. So i took the opportunity to get some of my car photos from the wedding done too!

And i got a old Datsun advertisement poster i found framed too.

https://flic.kr/p/2hA13Hv

Another one i put in the office. Even though my Zed wasn't done, i still had some zed mates come as part of the entourage.

https://flic.kr/p/2hAVGcE

In the garage, i swapped out the candle sticks for lights, for down lights. I added about 8 or 9. So now its nice and bright in there. I also put up some of my spare American licence plates, and got a cool neon clock!

https://flic.kr/p/2hAarmA

up close:

https://flic.kr/p/2hAedXd

The wife did say we needed to get the "house" ready for the party... well, the garage is part of the house too!

I'm editing the next Datsun video now, where it has paint! i got some cool footage of the painter laying colour on it. I gave him my gopro to put in the booth while he sprayed it.

Thanks brother! Yes i have always tried to be more on the subtle side with my modifications, lowered a little, nice wheels and thats about it. In saying that, I've never had a 600hp car that NEEDS some not so subtle fat rubber on the rear end to hook up! (hopefully the Datsun can be that car! )

Looking great, Rudi. When you have a spare moment or two, could you drop by our home and spread a bit of your magic around? Shouldn't take more than a month or so.

Can't wait to see the next video!

Video update 12 - THE ZED GETS PAINT!

Ok so you guys have seen all the photo's, but i also left one of my go pro cameras with the painter, and he chucked it in the booth when the car got painted.

So i did some editing, and here is my Latest video update, where the zed gets paint!

No problem bud! just pay for my flights and im there!

Well I am just (Emerald) green with envy. You must be stoked !

That's a understatement!

But i'll be happier once i have the bill paid and its home. I'm stressing because I'm not sure what the final figure will be, I was told a rough around price, which i was happy with.

However since then, extra to what i was quoted, i let him fix some rust in the door we found, and he had to finesse the repair work i did on the fuel door quite a bit, he spent some more time than anticipated fixing hail damage in the roof, and i also got him to apply seam sealer all around the edges.

I'm anticipating another 3-5k on top of my initial quote due to this extra work... but heck, i don't know, I have a extra 10k set aside above what i was quoted just in case. I don't think it will be that much more but you never know, these things ALWAYS blow out by thousands of dollars.

Update Friday:

So i headed down to the paint shop today after work, the painter had asked for all my locks and latches to do a final gap up.

I got there at about 3pm and it was pretty quiet, so i thought the hell with it, and got his help pulling my car out from a storage bay.

I figured I'd hang around and fit up the door locks, handles and latches. It's a pretty tricky job on these old 2+2 zeds, as it has 2 door handles per door on the inside, a front one down low for the driver and a rear one up top for the back seat passengers to be able to open the door from the back seat.

By the time i had finished 4 hours had passed and it was 7pm! took a while to remember how it all went together! Then spent abit of time adjusting door gaps and latches etc too.

https://flic.kr/p/2hDyUWg

.

https://flic.kr/p/2hDyUV4

.

https://flic.kr/p/2hDCHHF

.

To be honest rebuilding the door is the one job i loathe doing the most on any cars, as every time i have ever replaced a power window motor, or regulator, or anything on any of my cars, i can never get the adjustments 100%. I usually end up with a window rattle because of it.

I guess i'm halfway done with this now, i wasn't really planning on rebuilding the doors first, but eh, here we are, i might bring over the windows and window channel and make use of a professionals help while the car is still at the shop. And get that all fitted up nicely now, and not worry about it later on.

.

In other news, i had been meaning to buy a few woodwork tools and... learn to woodwork.

I need to do my toilet wood panel inlaying and my mate is too busy atm.

I went to Bunnings to look at a drop saw, 90% of them were flimsy and plastic, apart from this trade spec Makita which was around $500, it was all metal and robust. But i didn't want to spend $500 on a saw that who knows how many times I'd really use it.

https://flic.kr/p/2hDBGy7

So i went to look for a second hand one on facebook marketplace.

And what would you know, someone was selling the exact same saw online. Used and beat to **** but working fine, he was upgrading to something bigger.

So i got it for $100. Score! Bit of a drive down to Camden to get it, but its ok!

https://flic.kr/p/2hDyUSo

.

Then lastly i found some second hand Red Balau Decking for pretty cheap, once again, on Facebook. Too bad it was on the other side of Sydney, so i took the drive out to Dural to get some. What a mission that was!
Alot of pretty houses in that area! with really nice manicured gardens, i felt out of place being the western city scumbag i am!

https://flic.kr/p/2hDCHCR

This wood has a rounded edge and i need to mill it straight, not sure if i will buy a table saw, or a table router for the job. :headscrat

So that's a work in progress too.

Update November 2019

Small update....

The car Isn't ready to be picked up yet... still :(

It legit just needs a denib and a buff, 2 hours worth of work....

HOPEFULLY.... next week i can have it home.....

In other news:

Continued with getting some woodworking tools, had a MASSIVE score on a garage sale, and picked up a table saw with Hitachi saw, table router with Hitachi 1/2" router and a Makita jigsaw, all for $350.

https://flic.kr/p/2hLkAKU

Don't know how to use any of it yet, need to watch some Youtube videos i think.

Also, a Delayed housewarming present from a few of my mates who all chipped in to get me a pellet smoker....

https://flic.kr/p/2hLsk8t

Really i should be more into smoking by now....My mate has been trying to get me interested for years. But meh... i just prefferred eating my mates cooking.

And this mate is the best bbq'er in Australia, wining grand champion last year with his team.

They then got a invite over to America for the grand American royal in.... Kansas city? He came 32nd out of 550 for brisket and they got 35th or so out of 400 for pork. They were the best placed international team.

So yeah... he is happily going to show me the ropes.

He said the auto pellet smoker is easy as, just set your temp, put in your meat and 12 hours later its cooked perfectly.

Here is some of his work:

https://flic.kr/p/2hLsk7B

.

https://flic.kr/p/2hLrgRz

who knows, maybe I'll get right into it! He always wanted me to be in his team.. LOL at least i have the beard for it!

Yum, I just had Rudi's BBQ, the American one, last night, lol. .
Z( why does the rest of the world call them ZED's?) is looking great. I hate doing doors, too, especially aligning window channels on hardtop cars like my 1966 Chevelle, but if you can utilize the talents of your bodyman, go for it!
Your Daily seems like a pretty fun driver, so the roadtrips to get a deal on tools and materials would be like an added bonus for me.

Update December 2019

Still no car......

I've heard a rumor its done, but he hasn't called me yet....

*sigh*.... might go down today...

Anyway.....

Work in the garage has progressed:

I have been working on the wood inlaying for the bathroom door:

https://flic.kr/p/2hYtMKS

here it is just resting in place, 1 segment anyway. My clamps are only 600mm long, so i can only glue so many together at once:

https://flic.kr/p/2hYtMLy

scored this HUGGEEE cabinet from work, which was a pain, it took 3 months to organize to be able to take this, geting it written off and paperwork and whatnot:

https://flic.kr/p/2hYrirD

And i fitted pegboard to the wall to give me some more storage options:

https://flic.kr/p/2hYriqr

.

https://flic.kr/p/2hYrioN

So slowly making some progress here....

Yeah doors are the absolute worst, these sux even more as the door has 2 door handles on the inside, one at the back so the rear passenger can open the door and get out too.
I just spent over $1000 to cobble together a new semi complete weatherstrip kit.
I had bits and pieces coming from all over. I had parts from Adelaide, Melbourne, ( capital cities of different states) from japan and Even America. I had to buy some gaskets no one else had supply of, from a place in California that specializes in datsuns....

For 2 taillight gaskets, and 2 quarter window to body seal gaskets, cost me $470 posted here!!!!!! our exchange rate sux, so $100 US for postage = $150 Aud, and $183 in USD for parts costs alot more too! Bah!

But i guess.. you cant have a nice fresh painted car and then have scummy old rotten door and body seals....

Update December/Jan: Wood working

Been chipping away at my woodwork projects over my short Christmas break.

Even so, I haven't really put much time into it. The bush fires around here are no joke, many, many days its been way too smokey to work outside.

I'm already doing 11 hour days at work outside. so i get home and just want to shower and stay indoors like a potato.

My best mate also lost his home in the Balmoral fire 2 days before Christmas, So I've been running around trying to get him and his kids stuff too behind the scenes.

But i did get a bit done:

Finished the Panel for the side of my toolbox. The wood is a mix of tassie oak and red balau:

https://flic.kr/p/2iaasjx

I felt it was a bit too light with just a clear coat on it, and it didn't match the rest of the toolbox. So i tried to mix up a stain, i think i used a mix of cedar and walnut?

https://flic.kr/p/2iaashD

And here it is bolted in place: I also put danish oil on it, a few coats with a sand in between. The workbench top was just coated in Vegetable oil, and it is really sticky in places over time, so i don't wanna use that again.

Not a perfect match, but eh, i'm happy with how it turned out for me not really doing any woodwork before.

https://flic.kr/p/2iabzVP

I also finished the door, and gave it the same treatment:

https://flic.kr/p/2iaashi

Also took a drive down to Appin and bought some more wood, this time 35mm thick, for the side paneling, I've cut it to side but have not routed the edges straight yet.

Timber work looks great Rudi. If there's anything your mate needs a hand with please let us know.

Thanks mate, everyone has really come together to help them out which is nice. someone started a gofund me which raised 20k for them.

I emptied my pockets too, gonna give him a few weeks worth of overtime, no biggie, it would only be money for the Datsun anyway, and i already have a decent buffer there.

How are things up the mountain your way? are you safe still?

Hehe thanks for the compliments guys! Its all i can do, i sure as hell cant do any complex wooden project with dove tail joints or bow tie inlays or what not. So i stick to gluing sticks together and fitting them between black metal squares!

:bounce:

Update end of January

Its been a rough month for me in general.....

Apart from my mate loosing his house to the bush fires over Christmas, and me running around helping him, i also cracked my tooth in half chewing on pork crackling, right as we counted in the new year!

And i also had a close death in the family on my wife's side, so actually today is the first day/night I've had any time to myself in 2 weeks. The last 2 weeks consisted of me coming home from work, showering, going with the wife to relatives house to mourn/ wake (it lasts 14 days) get home midnight, up for work, rinse and repeat. :(

But today i had off!

So i got cracking with some work!

Firstly, continuing with my wood panel for the toilet. I sanded it down today with the belt sander, then spewed some green epoxy into all the holes and knots.... hopefully it will come out nice once i sand it back, we will see tomorrow:

https://flic.kr/p/2ik74Ax

I had gone to Appin to get some more timber for the toilet wall, and i picked out some spotted gum. i got 25m worth in 1m lengths, that i cut down to size for my wall inlay.

well i had 2 lengths at 1.5m, and after looking at them, figured they were too nice to cut up, so i decided to make some shelves with them.

First step: get some scrap box steel and plate and make some mounting brackets and dyna bolt them to the wall:

https://flic.kr/p/2ik74AC

The Spotted gum was sanded down with a belt sander, as it was just rough sawn, then i applied 2 coats of danish oil, and bolted them to my brackets:

https://flic.kr/p/2ik4Chc

.

https://flic.kr/p/2ik74za

It will be used to store my car care products i use regularly:

https://flic.kr/p/2ik74yd

.

Just before christmas i had some ram raid security bollards fitted to my garage. I had to wait 3 days for the concrete to cure around the sleeve, before i tried to fit the bollard.

Well waiting 3 days turned into waiting a month and a half. Today i tried to fit the bollards... and they didn't fit in the sleeve... hmmm but why?

https://flic.kr/p/2ik8eW1

Seems this welded seam was fouling on the bollard side. so i had to bust out the grinder and dremel and mill it down....

.

But i got it sorted in the end:

https://flic.kr/p/2ik8eV9

Lastly i had the painter at work spray some paint on my front K member and front suspension pieces for the zed.
To be honest im not real happy with the job he did, its abit ****, but, it will be hidden by the engine, and its better than it was before.

https://flic.kr/p/2ik4Cdj

Lastly, I went down to see the painter, and said, after the family funeral i will be ready to FINALLY take the car home.

I was mainly waiting for the bollards to get installed tbh.

(See i had a really busy day today playing catchup!!!)

Interesting on the security bollards. I would never have thought to install them. Is there a big threat of someone ramming into your garage space there?

not really, I actually live in a nice area. but I've read and heard of too many stories of muscle cars getting flogged lately.

Its probably mostly all urban legends, but it's peace of mind, to know that my car cant be stolen.

You might think i'm being paranoid, hell i think that, but i'm not that bad! look at this guy! This is a photo of a job the guys who installed my bollards did for another customer.

The car is a mazda Rx2 capella, HOT property, These things are prime pickings to get flogged as they are very desirable, worth over 100k nowdays... i think this bloke went overboard:

https://flic.kr/p/2ikuXCv

Most people i know with hotted up cars will spend $1000 on a video security system for their garage. All the bells and whistles, it can connect to your phone, cook your roast dinner and give you a prostate exam too!

And when time comes where they need the footage, its at night and looks like it was filmed with a baked potato, foiled by a $5 hooded jumper that the criminal was wearing! rendering their footage useless!

Id rather rely on some mechanical security.

First time seeing the use of bollards in a domestic garage! I'm a bit of a paranoid myself, so now you've given me some bad ideas lol! Time for some automated machine guns now!

Nice looking shelves!

Great update, Rudi. Condolences on your family loss, and mate's home. That's always a hard pill to swallow. Bollards are a great idea; I guess the have some way to lock into the slot on the socket that you can unlock and remove the bollard easily? That RX2 looks sweet with a perfect paint job. Friend had a new one back in my college days that was a real screamer for the time. Ate lots of end seals under warranty. Garage is looking fantastic with all the nice woodwork. Hoping things calm down a bit to finish the space and get the Z home for assembly! Thanks!

Thanks for the info on the bollards. Maybe I need to do that. Hmmm. Makes a good pulling post too for dead cars to get pulled into the shop.

And, I just have to say WOW on that paint on the black car. Insanely beautiful, as is the paint on your Z.
