So I have another topic I've been discussing with a friend of mine.

He seems to think that an electrician would be able to splice my plug, and run half of the amps from one 480V outlet and another 50 amps from another 480V outlet.

This would avoid the need to hardwire, for a portable unit that draws 100 amps.

Dumb idea?

Must be the "new" electricity....

Edit: I really feel like these are trolling threads, questions about high power industrial devices without consideration for the basic concept of series and parallel, "wind 'em up and let 'em go!!!!"

Okay, because the highest rated plug you can have is 50 amps.

I'm the last one to know anything about electricity, but don't want to call an electrician and sound like a ***** if you know what I mean.

Not just a dumb idea but a completely ridiculous idea.
You need to stop discussing this with your friends and just as I said before, contact an ELECTRICIAN.

BTW You can't have 480 in a residential setting.

funny that you are comfortable coming here to do that but not to a professional.

go for it. It would actually be easier to split it between 5 20 amp plugs. They are much cheaper and the wiring is easier to work with as well. I'd much rather run 5 stranded THHN cables than have to deal with some oversized, bulky 1 gauge aluminum.

100 amp rated pin and sleeve plugs are available, expensive but available. If you know exactly what you need you can find some deals on ebay.

Geez this whole thread is a mess.

Lets backup and start with the machine specs.

Also, is this in a commercial or industrial facility?

Wait a minute.

Youre the same guy with the thread on large air compressors.

That about sums it up^

You aren't going to parallel two 50A plugs. If the machine has two separate loads inside that could each run off a 50A plug then it may be possible to split them up and run independently but without knowing a thing about this machine why would anyone bother guessing...

Maybe It is coincidental but today is 4/20. The idea of this post seems to be product of smoking 420.

In plain words, a kind of a pipe dream.

Not true. I can wire up a 3 phase transformer off my RPC. So if I had a 240/480v transformer I could have 480 in my garage. In fact I’ve done it already temporarily to check operation of a couple machines wired 480v.

He's not saying it's not possible, just that 480 VAC is against code in residential areas.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure this guy is just straight trolling.
