Running a 230v

I'm in southern California and was wondering if I'm able to apply for permit and then run the line myself (or someone with the knowledge) or does it need to be a licensed electrician?

I'm off tomorrow/today and I plan on getting a few quotes but I know this isn't going to be cheap and my cousin does this kind of work for a living but he's not licensed and since this isn't a little 120v line I'd be worried about something going wrong and my insurance won't help since it wont have a permit.

All depends on the local rules. Some places let you do it, some places you can do it after you take a test or somehow show you know what you are doing. If your cousin does this kind of work they should know if it can be done yourself. The place where you get your permit will also be able to tell you if you can do it yourself.

And Kern County is PG&E territory 230V is not listed in the Greenbook as a available voltage, 240V is.


Get your permit, ask questions about anything to do the job here and should be good to go.

Most jurisdictions in CA do not require a CA licensed C10 Electrical Contractor to sign off on a home-owner job. This ain't Chicago. And most jurisdictions in CA allow a home-owner to pull an electrical permit and do their own work to be inspected. Where I am, the electrical inspector(s) are very nice and allow one repeat visit to inspect corrections and most don't even invoke a re-inspection fee if they have to come back a 3rd time. That is unless the home owner or contractor is giving them a hard time. They definitely know how to reciprocate.

Ran 220v 60amp service out to my garage 2 days ago. Gonna be so much nicer not having to run down in the basement and reset the 20amp 110v breaker I was using... Best of luck with your upgrade!
