Is it possible to run a 110V electric motor in both directions, by using a toggle switch to reverse the run capacitor leads?

Thinking of making my drill press use left hand bits.

Not unless the motor is designed to be reversed, I don't think you will find it to be possible.

My Dayton drill press has a motor, that by examining the wiring diagram, I determined to be a reversible motor, depending on the position of jumpers on the spade connectors under the cover plate on the end. I got the drill press new, damaged, as it had fallen on the switch and it was destroyed. An electrician friend had a Square D Fwd/Off/Rev drum switch in his pile of spare parts and I sat down and figured out the wiring circuit from the motor terminals to the switch. It took seven wires, plus the power cord into the drum switch, to make it happen, but I have a reversible drill press now.

To add to my previous post, here are some pics of what I did. Bear in mind, I had a single phase motor that was designed to be reversed by the way it was jumpered.

I put a F/R switch on one of my drill presses. It only has a 1/3HP split phase Dayton motor. I didn't do anything as fancy as a drum switch but I do have to remember to stop the motor before I reverse it. The motor ON/OFF switch is on the front of the unit. The F/R switch is an ordinary SPDT light switch mounted in a box on the motor. I use left hand bits in it to drill out broken bolts etc. It has been a long time since I did the wiring so I do not remember what I swapped with the F/R switch.

I think I looked at my other drill press and that motor was not reversible.

Drill press, possibly reversable. Look at the label on the motor, if the motor is reversable, it would say how to do it on the label

Sometimes the wireing label is on the inside of the little plate where the wires go in.
