Running Romex Through New Stud Bays

Sorry, not familiar with the terminology, but I have installed some horizontal 2x4 framing in my garage, to act as shelving. The frame is lag-screwed to the horizontal ceiling joists along one edge and then supported on the other edge by vertical 2x4s (and some metal straps) that go up and attach to the diagonal rafters. I am wondering if it is "to code" to run Romex wire through these new cavities? The previous owner ran Romex through a short section, for some outdoor lights, which has been stapled well (you can just about see it in the top-right). I would like to add a new lighting circuit and this would seem like an easy option for me, as the "bays" are open on the underside (I eventually want to close it up with drywall). Can I put outlets up in these bays even though they are not part of the original garage frame structure?

I don't see any reason why you can't run romex through these bays and mount receptacle boxes to the structure that you later plan to enclose with sheet rock. Just follow code as to frequency of staples, box mounting, etc.

I am curious as to how the ceiling joist is supported that your new shelf structure is lagged into. I can see that the outer edge is supported vertically up to the rafters, but can't see what is holding up the joist.

As long as it's stapled and holes through the studs have nail guards installed..... Not an issue.

Sorry Steevo, not sure which part you mean. Are you talking about the ceiling joist that is part of the original garage structure (i.e. covered by drywall)? If so, this just runs from one side-wall of the garage to another.
